ASICS Global Study Shows Link Between Regular Exercise in Teenage Years and Positive Mental Wellbeing in Adulthood
Apr 08, 2024
Global ASICS study of 26,000 people reaffirms the connection between movement and the mind and uncovers a direct link between teenage physical activity and adult mental wellbeing Each additional year a teenager remains engaged in exercise is associated with improved State of Mind scores in adulthood, with the ages of 15-17 identified as the most critical years for staying active Yet, younger generations are disengaging from exercise earlier and in larger numbers, potentially impacting their mental wellbeing now and for years to come LONDON, April 09, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, ASICS is announcing the results of its second Global State of Mind Study, which reaffirms a positive link between physical exercise and mental wellbeing and uncovers a link between being physically active in teenage years and positive mental wellbeing in adulthood. The study of over 26,000 respondents across 22 countries found that the more people exercise, the higher their State of Mind scores1. Across the globe, respondents who are regularly active2 have an average State of Mind score of 67/100, while inactive3 people have a much lower State of Mind score of just 54/100. What's more, the study uncovered that being physically active in your teenage years directly impacts your mind later in life. Participants who engaged in exercise throughout their adolescence report higher activity levels and State of Mind scores as adults. The findings indicate that remaining active as a teenager is key to establishing good exercise habits that last into adulthood and positively impact adult mental wellbeing. In fact, the study was able to pinpoint the ages of 15-17 as the most critical years for staying active and when dropping out of exercise significantly ...Full story available on Benzinga.com

'Two French fries short of a Happy Meal': MTG ridiculed on The View for latest theory
Apr 08, 2024
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) proclaimed last week that an earthquake in the northeastern United States Friday, followed by today's solar eclipse, was a "sign from God." It sent "The View" co-hosts into peals of laughter and mockery. The panelists were quick with jokes recalling Donald Trump embracing the 2017 eclipse by staring directly at the sun without protective glasses while his staff yelled for him not to look directly because it could permanently damage eyes. "Maybe that's what's wrong with him," quipped Sunny Hostin. ALSO READ: A criminologist explains why keeping Trump from the White House is all that matters "Maybe that explains things," agreed Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as Trump's communications director. "With the earthquake on Friday and the eclipse today, people are having all sorts of conspiracies about the end of the world. And then I read online that the epicenter was actually at Bedminster, New Jersey. Fun fact. So it originated with Trump." Another thing Hostin said is that there's a new cycle of cicadas coming this summer. Each generation of cicadas surfaces either every 13 years or every 17 years. There are those who believe that the Rapture is coming due to the confluence of events. Trump even used the eclipse to promote himself, showing his profile plunging the Earth into darkness in an ad. Whoopi Goldberg explained that all of these events happen all the time and it isn't an indication of anything ending the world. While the solar eclipse is making its way across the U.S. in 2024, it happens annually in various parts of the world. For example, there was a total solar eclipse in Antarctica on Dec. 4, 2021. That same day, the Semeru volcano erupted. All the while, the COVID-19 pandemic continued to plague the world. The Oxford High School shooter's parents were also arrested that day. Still, the confluence of events prompted Greene to tell the world that they must repent because all of the events happening at the same time meant God was displeased with the world. "I hope she listens," shaded Hostin after reading MTG's tweet. "She needs to listen, anyway.""She better listen," agreed Joy Behar. "That woman is two french fries short of a Happy Meal."The frequently used euphemism for stupidity or mental unfitness is similar to saying "a can short of a six-pack," "a quart low," "the elevator doesn't go all the way to the top," "the meatballs are sliding off the spaghetti," and "a few fruitloops short a bowl."See the comments from the co-hosts in the video below or at the link here.

'Great idea. Let's go!' Trump critics approve his offer to be jailed like Nelson Mandela
Apr 06, 2024
At the tail end of a three-part Truth Social rant on Saturday, Donald Trump raged at being placed under a gag order by Judge Juan Merchan tied to the upcoming trial related to the former president paying hush money to an adult film star, with the Trump saying he would gladly go to jail rather than have his right to speak abridged. To make his point, Trump compared him to human rights icon Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years in jail for leading the African National Conference (ANC) for opposing the apartheid policies in South Africa. In a bit of a stretch, the former president apparently sees a bit of himself in the career arc of Mandela who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his work.ALSO READ: No, Donald Trump, fraud is not protected by the First AmendmentAs part of his furious rant on Truth Social, he wrote: "Now, we have Merchan, who is not allowing me to talk, thereby violating the Law and the Constitution, all at once. It is so bad what he is trying to get away with - How was he even chosen for this case??? I heard he fought like hell to get it, and all of the rest of them also! If this Partisan Hack wants to put me in the 'clink' for speaking the open and obvious TRUTH, I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela - It will be my GREAT HONOR."Critics of Trump were quick to jump on his offer and honor his wishes, with X commenter writing, "Give him what he wants."That was the general response by a majority of X users as you can see below after Politico's Kyle Cheney reported, "Trump says on Truth Social that it would me 'my great honor' to go to jail for violating Judge Merchan’s gag order and that it will make him a 'modern day Nelson Mandela.'"Harris Peskin replied, "It would be my great honor to host a Trump is in jail party," with Exile Bob adding, "I would like to attend this party.""Great idea. Let’s go!!" wrote an approving Dorene Brown to which X user Chidi added, "May his wish be granted."Wobbly Genius observed, "Ah, Yes… Nelson Mandela, who was so famously prosecuted for falsifying business records to pay off a porn star.""Cool. I will wait outside when he’s released 27 years later," wrote another. In a longer post that detailed Mandela's history, Chris Swart concluded, "In the grand scheme of things, Trump eyeing jail time like it’s a badge of honour is akin to a toddler throwing a tantrum in a supermarket and then expecting to be carried out on the shoulders of cheering onlookers. The real 'honor' here might be in recognizing the vast chasm between facing consequences for one’s actions and the profound sacrifices made by true leaders like Mandela. But hey, in the world of Trumpian logic, why let reality spoil a perfectly good delusion?""Can he be held at Rikers? And no internet," asked Chris.Fan of Walt was skeptical but conceded, "One way to find out," with an agreeable Chica adding, "I say, let’s find out!""Sometimes you gotta call the bluff," suggested Bob Anderson.A resigned Nancy Hughes was agreeable, writing, "Ok whatever it takes."X user Debbie Margerum said it all with a meme: @kyledcheney — (@)

South Africa to end captive lion breeding for hunting
Apr 03, 2024
South Africa on Wednesday laid out plans to phase out the captive breeding of lions for hunting purposes as the country moves to ban the controversial business. The practice of breeding big cats to later have them shot by wealthy hunters typically paying thousands of US dollars has long been loathed by conservation and animal rights groups.Hunters, usually foreigners, sometimes take home the head or skin of the killed animal as a trophy. The South African government had already announced its intention to ban the breeding of lions for hunting in 2021 and an ad hoc panel has been working on the issue for the past two years."The panel recommended the closure of the captive breeding sector, including the keeping of lions in captivity, or the use of captive lions or their derivatives commercially," Environment Minister Barabara Creecy told a press conference in Cape Town.Breeders will have two years to voluntarily withdraw from the sector and change their business model before the ban kicks in.The idea, which has faced strong opposition from representatives of the highly lucrative industry, was approved by the government last week but is yet to be translated into law.The move comes with trophy hunting facing a growing backlash in the West.Campaigns to ban the import of trophies have drawn support in the United States, Australia and several European countries in recent years."The industry is large and complex with a long history that is not aligned with both current international trends and domestic policy changes on conservation," said Kamalasen Chetty, head of the ad hoc panel.Between 8,000 and 12,000 lions are kept on about 350 farms across South Africa, according to estimates by animal rights groups that regularly denounce the conditions in which the animals are held. The number of wild lions in comparison totals only around 3,500, according to the Endangered Wildlife Trust, a South Africa-based NGO.© 2024 AFP
