A HUGE inferno has broken out in central London leaving smoke billowing over Holborn as fire brigades don breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.
Six fire engines have attended the scene to battle back the fire on Clerkenwell road mere metres from Farringdon Station.
75 per cent of the roof of the building is currently engulfed in flames lighting the skies around Holborn and Clerkenwell in an orange glow while commuters struggle to navigate the surrounding roads.
The building is a 4-floor shop and office block which is currently undergoing construction works, London Fire Brigade officials have confirmed.
The blaze was first called in to emergency responders at 5.26pm
The Metropolitan Police are also attending the scene to support the Fire Brigade's work amid road closures along the busy commuter area.
One witness tweeted: "Massive fire on Clerkenwell Road near Farringdon Station.
"Road is blocked in both directions so take another route if you can."
Another added: “Fire on Clerkenwell road, all traffic stopped and seems to come from a building surrounded by scaffolding.
“London's fire brigade is on the case so hopefully no victims.
“Traffic at a standstill.”
