BBC Masterchef when it returns to screens tonight. And in the midst of the first round of contestants who’ll be pitting their wits and culinary skills against each other is Muir, 53, from
Scotland. Born in Turriff, the children’s mental health service manager grew up in Banff and Perth but now lives in West Yorkshire with her 13-year-old daughter and their wee pooch Millie. Speaking ahead of the launch of the 20th series of the iconic BBC show , Muir revealed she was inspired to develop her passion for cooking by her auntie’s tasty leek and tattie soup. Muir said: “I helped mum out with cooking and we baked a lot when I was growing up. I started to get interested in cooking when I left home at 18 and my aunt Una taught me how to make lentil soup and leek and tattie soup.” Read More Related Articles Giovanni Pernice 'to have crunch talks with BBC' as fourth Strictly star 'in tears' over training Read More Related Articles BBC EastEnders' Lorraine Stanley flaunts incredible five stone weight loss Describing her cooking style as “eclectic” Muir hopes to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace enough to keep her place for the next eight weeks as they embark on their latest challenge to find the UK’s best amateur cook, one plate at a time. Muir went on: “My cooking style is eclectic. I love cooking for a crowd, developing a theme and adding different dishes. Yotam Ottolenghi has been my favourite chef for many years, but I am getting more and more interested in different cooking techniques like sous vide or making culinary foams and gels. I enjoy cooking with
Friends and experimenting with different flavours and styles.” Join the Daily Record's

Muir told the BBC she’s “always fancied” getting involved in MasterChef as it’s the “ultimate cookery competition” And what better year to enter than for the programme’s 20th anniversary. Muir added: “I can remember watching MasterChef when Lloyd Grossman presented – it was very serious and the studio was very black. I’ve watched this MasterChef a lot over the past 20 years and love the range of styles people bring and the challenges it presents to home cooks. “I think MasterChef really encourages people to be more adventurous with their cooking and also brings a whole new language to our kitchens. Anything seems possible at home now.” Asked what her “food dream” would be by show producers, Muir revealed her aim would be to run a supper club at a local cafe where the main objectives would be “fantastic food” and “fun fun fun”.
