BBC nature documentary Mammals shocked viewers with one gruesome scene. The series focuses on how animals have adapted to every environment, and in the first episode, we saw a coyote source its food – a rabbit. ‘They are skilful hunters,’ Sir David informed us as the mammal surveyed a patch of greenery in
Chicago during the nighttime. The coyotes have switched to nocturnal to avoid human beings, and it’s been a successful plan with over 4000 coyotes now in the city. They can catch their food often without interruption, and the footage showed them doing exactly that. In the shocking moment, a coyote ripped the bunny apart and chewed it. To top it off the episode aired on Easter Sunday, a day synonymous with the adorable animal. ‘Before dawn arrives, these coyotes retreat into the shadows. It’s the ingenuity and adaptability of these mammals that has enabled them to become active in conditions that we avoid,’ Sir David informed us. Viewers took to X to react to the savage scene which saw the bunny become the victim of the food chain. ‘The bunny got eaten on Easter Sunday 🙈 Come on David I’m still eating my tea,’ wrote viewer Lynn Kelly on X. Adam Guest also pointed out the unfortunate timing of the bunny’s end of life being aired on Easter Sunday: ‘Good on the BBC for ending Easter Sunday with a coyote eating a bunny head.’ ‘Oh, no, not the bunnies,’ said a horrified Tracey. The story begins 200 million years at the time of dinosaurs and includes humans in the narrative. Sir David also recently worked on Secret World of Sound for Sky and NOW, and their Director of Documentaries and Factual, Poppy Dixon let us in on a secret at a special event . ‘Not a lot of people know that many natural history programmes don’t actually record sound on location.
