And my wife tells me, for the first time in more than 20 years of marriage, I'm right." Paul's original Britain's Got Talent audition is now iconic (Image: ITV) He added that his decision to take part in Britain’s Got Talent in 2007 was decided by a “coin flip”. He added: “I filled in the application form and I caught my reflection in a laptop and I thought, ‘Why would anybody choose you? You do the wrong kind of
music. You're too old. Why would they choose you? " It was the night before the entry shut. “I decided that I'll flip a coin if it lands on heads, I'll enter. If it lands on tails, I won't. Thankfully, it did land on heads.” Paul then shared how he almost “walked away” from his now famous Nessun Dorma audition that reduced judge Amanda Holden to tears. He explained: “The couple before me were from Bristol. It was a wife dancing with a pashmina scarf to her husband, whistling birdsong and the audience was baying for blood. I thought, ‘What are you doing?’ I seriously considered walking away but I didn't in the end.” On Britain’s Got Talent, Paul defeated the bookmakers' co-favourite Connie Talbot, and received the highest percentage of two million votes cast to win £100,000. He then performed Sarah Brightman's Nella Fantasia at the Royal Variety Performance on December 3, 2007, in front of
Queen Elizabeth II. Since then Paul has gone on to further success, releasing albums and touring the world with his music. His story was also turned into a film, One Chance, which starred
James Corden. You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here .
