A Rachel Furness penalty was the difference as
Tottenham secured their first ever WSL win against
Liverpool at the Hive 4.14pm BST
Rachel Furness’s coolly taken penalty was enough to clinch a narrow win for Tottenham against Liverpool in the first ever meeting between the two sides. The visitors had the better of the first half at the Hive, but found themselves trailing when some sloppy play at the back allowed Furness to steal into the box and win a penalty. She got up to dispatch it, and Liverpool chances faded midway through the second half when Niamh Fahey was sent off for a cynical foul on Rosella Ayane.
Elsewhere a pair of sensational long-range goals – the second struck from 35 yards – by Chloe Kelly took Everton to a 2-0 win over Bristol City. The win takes the Toffees level on points at the top of the table with
Manchester City, who won by the same scoreline at Reading, Pauline Bremer with both the goals. And stoppage-time strike from Adelina Engman earned
Chelsea a point at Brighton, who were denied a fist win of the season after taking a late lead through Aileen Whelan. 3.57pm BST
And that’s that. Spurs’ points are secure, and they were hard earned. Liverpool remain pointless after two games, and it was the red card for Fahey that spelled the end for their chances here. They saw plenty of the ball but badly lacked cutting edge up front. Spurs, meanwhile, can bask in the glory of a first ever WSL win. Thanks for reading!
