Ivanka Trump, President Trump's daughter and senior White House adviser, took a victory lap on Fox & Friends Thursday morning to tout the new GOP tax plan, except she didn't appear to have all the details of the bill's effects down pat.
"I'm really looking forward to doing a lot of traveling in April when people realize the effect that this has, both on the process of filling out their taxes — the vast majority will be doing so on a single postcard — but also having experienced the relief that will be starting as early as February," Trump said.
That likely won't be the case.
Nearly all of the tax changes take effect next year, which means the 2017 tax return most people will file in April will continue to follow the current code.
As for postcard-sized filings? That's also not a reality for the 2018 tax season.
According to Politifact, the bill does not establish a postcard option, and Patrick Newton, a spokesman for the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, told the fact-checking website that the IRS would have to issue a new regulation for that to happen.
Ivanka Trump didn't conceive the idea of the postcard filing herself, though. Republicans had said the overhaul would allow for the simplified option, and the president even kissed a postcard while sitting next to GOP congressional leaders last month.
Before Wednesday's bill passed, some Americans could already file using the one-page 1040EZ form if they met certain conditions. "Whatever they end up with in the future will probably look a lot like that currently does," Newton told Politifact.
Trump appeared to acknowledge the blunder when responding to a tweet calling her out after her Fox interview, writing "Correct! All across America people will be thinking about how cumbersome the old tax code is & energized about upcoming simplification!"
