Queen, Cher , age 77, had everyone laughing during her acceptance speech for the iHeartRadio 2024 Icon Award at an event held in
Los Angeles,
California on Monday. The Believe
Singer, who has blessed the
music world for over six decades, was given the award during the iHeartRadio Music Awards evening at the Dolby Theatre.
Meryl Streep launched her introduction, while Jennifer Hudson belted out her classic hit, If I Could Turn Back Time, following which, Cher took to the stage to sing Believe. In typical Cher
fashion, she strutted her stuff on-stage wearing black cargo pants and a glittery rhinestone top, paired with a jacket complete with rhinestone embellished sleeves. Cheekily, she pointed out she's had those trousers for 40 years. As she claimed her award, Cher confessed: "If you know me you know i just wrote my speech while getting my eyelashes put on." Her humour didn't hide her sincere side though, as she opened up about her struggles: "I don't usually talk about it but I've been down and out so many times that you cannot believe it. Dropped by my record companies and couldn't get a
Job," she revealed. "I never gave up my dream." Rounding off her moving speech, she had advice for all: "I know from my own experience that if you have a dream and you stick with it you will have a wonderful life and it will probably come true." iHeartRadio has honoured Cher with a special award, saying it's for "honouring her unparalleled contributions to music and pop culture for over seven decades". Cher is the only star to have topped the Billboard charts in each of the last seven decades. She became famous as part of Sonny and Cher with Sonny Bono. Taylor Swift was awarded Best Artist at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday night. She wasn't there in person but she had a pre-recorded video. In it, she said: "I wanted to say thank you so much to anyone who voted for this award. iHeart you've just been so incredibly supportive over the course of my entire career, especially this year it's been pretty spectacular."
