BBC’s new drama This Town kicked off on Sunday, March 31 and while viewers enjoyed the first episode, many shared a similar complaint. The six episode series comes from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight – who recently confirmed that Oscar winner Cillian Murphy would be returning for the upcoming Peaky's film. This Town follows the story of an extended family and a group of young people who are drawn into an explosive and thrilling
music scene in the Midlands in the 1980s. The series features actors from Downton Abbey, Marcella and My Policeman – read more about the cast here . The drama itself was filmed on location in the Birmingham area, including housing estates across Birmingham, Coventry and the Black Country, Bromford and Coventry's Riley Square and at Steven Knight’s new Digbeth Loc. Film and TV Studios. Despite being shot in Birmingham, viewers couldn’t help but notice that the cast’s Brummie accents weren’t up to scratch. READ MORE: Is

Twitter , following the first episode, one person said: “#ThisTown when are Birmingham based tv dramas going to cast actual brummies? Not people from Coventry or surrounding areas because the accents are so forced and sound stupid.. we ain’t from the Black Country!!” A second echoed: “Chelmsley Wood is actually in Solihull not Birmingham as of 1974. At least get your facts correct for a TV Drama. The Brummie accents are very dodgy too.” A third commented: “Music great. Accents terrible. Story even worse.” Another shared: “Enjoying this so far but dislike their fake Birmingham accents. The Brummie accent doesn’t sound like that.” And a further person wrote: “Turned it off. Too many blag accents. #ThisTown.” This Town continues on BBC One on Monday, April 1 at 9pm. All episodes are available on BBC iPlayer right now.
