Anthony Gordon has reacted angrily after being suspended for Newcastle’s match against Everton on Tuesday due to a “ridiculous” decision from the referee. Gordon was one of the stars of Newcastle's dramatic 4-3 comeback win over West Ham on Saturday in the Premier League. The
England forward won both penalties that Alexander Isak converted and provided the assist for Harvey Barnes’ late winner. But his joyous afternoon turned sour when he was shown a second yellow card by referee Rob Jones in the 94th minute. Gordon had already been booked when he kicked the ball away to prompt another yellow card for time-wasting. “I tapped the ball away. How far you want to look into that... it's incredible really,” he said. “To get sent off for tapping a ball five yards. To be honest with you, I only think he booked me because he didn't know he'd booked me before. That's not good enough to be honest with you. Watch the

Job to do. They are the rules so he's sticking to the rules and laws of the game but it's ridiculous really.” Gordon will serve an automatic one-game suspension against his former club Everton, who visit St James’ Park on Tuesday evening. The 23-year-old forward joined Newcastle from the Toffees for £45million back in January 2023 and would have been relishing the chance to face them. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is gutted to lose Gordon for the game but believes two-goal hero Barnes can plug the gap. “That's a huge blow for us, it sort of summed up the day really another absentee,” he said. “A big blow for us, especially for him personally with the game it was but Harvey and Elliot [Anderson] have come on the pitch and done really well so at least we have players in form." The former Leicester winger then produced a fabulous piece of skill to bend the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to win it. “He is an incredible player,” Howe told the
BBC of Barnes. “We have missed him this season and he would have given us quality wherever he played. He is a goalscorer and they are so valuable, and his two finishes today were of the highest quality.” Gordon won’t be the only Newcastle player missing against Everton after Jamaal Lascelles, Timo Livramento and Miguel Almiron were forced off injured against West Ham.
