Now there are calls for changes to the way animals are allowed to travel on flights to and from the UK. More than 5,200 people have signed a petition to Parliament calling for pets to be allowed to travel in the cabin of aeroplanes with their owners. Currently animals travel in the cargo hold with the luggage. Amongst those signatories, a number are from Cambridgeshire - including 14 from Cambridge. Elsewhere in the county it has been signed by eight people in Huntingdon , seven in South Cambridgeshire, six people in North West Cambridgeshire, five in North East Cambridgeshire, five in South East Cambridgeshire and three in Peterborough . "It is allowed in many other countries around the world, including in the EU , South America, and the
USA. Pets are often seen as an extension of the family. Many airlines allow pets up to 9kg to travel to most countries inside the airplane cabin, in their pet carrier, instead of in the cargo hold. "However, they are not allowed on commercial flights coming to the
UK, regardless of their size. This can not only distress the pets and owners, but can also risk their health and safety. There are cases of pets that are treated as manifest cargo being killed, injured or lost." The Government responds to any petition to Parliament that receives more than 10,000 signatures. Any that receives more than 100,000 is considered for debate in Parliament. Do you want more of the latest Cambridgeshire news as it comes in?
