Mosa Meat Dutch cultured beef company Mosa Meat announced on September 7 to be able to join the global community of businesses meeting high standards of social and environmental impact as it became a Certified B Corporation™ . To receive this type of certification businesses have to demostrate their performance, accountability, and transparency in their social and environmental impact. Cultivated meat, produced through innovative biotechnological processes, offers a promising solution to the environmental challenges posed by conventional meat production. So far, only a handful of small to medium meat producers following strict sustainability practices have been awarded with similar certifications. But as more data emerges supporting cultivated-protein's sustainability claims, cultivated meat is poised to pave the way for a more eco-friendly, ethical, and responsible approach to meat consumption. We believe in creating real, delicious meat that positively impacts the climate and our food system and are optimistic that these values will be shared across the many stakeholders in our nascent field of cellular agriculture," said Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat. The Maastricht-based company received certifications for two Impact Business Models (IBMs): one for its recognizable efforts in reducing natural resource and input use (energy and water), while the second was granted for its efforts to protect their mission. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio backed the company as advisor and investor since 2021, saying that the news makes 'a champion for change'. In a statement released by the company the Academy award winner said to be "proud to see Mosa Meat be the first cultivated meat company in the world to become B Corp Certified and hope it is the first of many." Mosa Meat has indeed pioneered the cultivated meat space since its earlierst inception, as it raise to fame back in 2013 presenting its first cultivated beef burger. More than being a burden Bosch said that Mosa Meat's legacy comes with a renewed pride and responsibility to lead by example: "Profit and purpose can go hand in hand if socially conscious businesses light the path, we feel that B Corp gave us a great framework to do just that, while serving as a signal for other mission-aligned partners, including prospective investors," he told. Earlier in May 2023, Mosa Meat opened its fourth facility in Maastricht, making it the world's largest cultured meat center which has the capacity to produce thousands of cultivated beef burgers a year.
