They won with a six-second lead after the majority of the race proved to be fairly close. Both teams were issued with a number of warnings in the beginning of the race for aggressive rowing. However, they remained neck-and-neck for a large part of the route. Despite being the underdogs, Cambridge prevailed to win back the trophy. It followed on from the women's earlier victory, making it a clean sweep for the Light Blues in this year's event. However, he added that "is what makes it special" and said he was very happy with the win.
