Shake Shack finally looks ready to make its Portland debut. The
New York City-based burger chain, which already has a location at Beaverton’s , has been planning to open a downtown Portland restaurant . But a recent visit to the construction site across West Burnside Street from Powell’s City of Books revealed a project nearing completion, with signage in place and ordering kiosks already installed. Shake Shack did not immediately return an email seeking comment, but one source close to the project said construction could be complete as soon as next month, with only detail work remaining. Shake Shack, which first opened in
New York City in 2004, built its reputation on “classic” roadside
American burgers, hot dogs, fries and frozen custard. The restaurant can be found in around 30 states as well as in Asia, the
Middle East and the
United Kingdom. According to Shake Shack’s initial proposal, the downtown Portland location plans to have covered and uncovered patio seating, as well as landscaping, bicycle parking and a fixed ping-pong table. Delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, construction and hiring finally began on the project last September. — Michael Russell;
