Ian “H” Watkins has taken the high road after facing criticism over his first skate with Matt Evers on Dancing On Ice.
Dancing On Ices H Watkins Hits Back At Viewer Offended By First Same-Sex Skate
Next month, H and Matt will make TV history as the first same-sex pair to ever compete on the ITV reality show, and viewers were given a taste of what to expect in Sunday night’s Christmas special, when they briefly skated together for the first time.
And while the moment was mostly met with praise, one viewer tweeted H to tell him how “offended” he was at the sight of two men on an ice rink together.
“I know i’m old fashioned but standards are now at rock bottom,” the tweet read. “I prefer Adam and Eve, Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. Not Adam and Steve or Everyone.
“This gender neutrality and gays dancing together is not normal and having pushed in front of me offends me.” H replied shortly afterwards, reminding everyone why he was so keen to perform with a male professional on the show.
“Just because you disagree does not change the fact that I exist. WE exist. The LGBTQ community exists,” the Steps singer wrote. “Your views are not old fashioned, they are archaic – but they make the LGBTQ community grow stronger, so thank you for that. How beautiful would the world be with acceptance?”Just because you disagree does not change the fact that I exist. WE exist. The LGBTQ community exists. Your views are not old fashioned, they are archaic - but they make the LGBTQ community grow stronger, so thankyou for that. How beautiful would the world be with acceptance? https://t.co/geCFyESPlC— Ian H Watkins (@Ianhwatkins) December 24, 2019Matt has also been taking on critics over on his own Twitter page, pointing out that many sports have people of the same sex competing side by side…So you must shut off Wimbledon then as well when the doubles compete... or wait... what about a football or rugby match with all those men on the same field playing. Think about what you’ve just typed and what we are actually doing. Skating... nothing more than skating. https://t.co/kdSj1Qfyry— Matt Evers (@TheMattEvers) December 22, 2019What just like Wimbledon showing doubles matches or God forbid a rugby or football match with all those MEN on the pitch playing at the same time?? Anne, think about what we are doing. SKATING. We are not having SEX. #openyoureyeshttps://t.co/1Buqfr9I34— Matt Evers (@TheMattEvers) December 23, 2019What about wrestling?? Google a wrestling match. In ballroom same sex happens all the time. The Argentine Tango was invented for 2 men... in skating... we have synchro which is almost 100% same sex. Please don’t tell me about a sport I’ve competed in for 32 years. 😘 https://t.co/9xdUdcC8es— Matt Evers (@TheMattEvers) December 23, 2019To be educated or educated yourself. Guess what... There are gay people in the world.... there has been since before Christ walked the planet. #shockhttps://t.co/GDsOrs4vVD— Matt Evers (@TheMattEvers) December 23, 2019Although rival series Strictly Come Dancing has not featured a same-sex couple competing yet, they did feature a routine between professionals Johannes Radebe and Graziano Di Prima during one of this year’s results shows.
Again, this performance was largely met with praise from viewers, although some also took issue with it, including almost 200 viewers who made formal complaints about watching two men ballroom dancing.
