George Michael’s former Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley has said he believes that questions still remain about singer’s death, and fears he will never have answers.
Andrew has revealed his distress at the lack of closure he’s felt around his friend’s death, after he was found dead at his home on
Christmas Day in 2016.
Police ruled that George’s death was not suspicious at the time, with a post-mortem examination later concluding he had died from heart disease and a build-up of fat in his liver. However, in his autobiography, Andrew writes (via The Mirror): “That the circumstances of his death seemed unclear only compounded the distress. Without any real closure, the grieving seemed terribly raw.
“A heart condition was recorded as the cause of death, but there were still a number of questions.”
He added: “When someone dies alone, perhaps there are always answers that remain out of reach. It still feels uncomfortable, though.”Andrew is publishing his book, Wham! George & Me, wanting to shine a light on this friend’s “glory days”.Speaking about the decision to write it on The Graham Norton Show, he said: “It seemed there was negativity after his death that threatened to overshadow his legacy, so I wanted to shift the perspective back on to the glory days and what was vibrant and exuberant about George’s life.”The book details his friendship with George from their meeting in 1975 at Bushey Meads School to their rise to fame and success as a duo, with hits including Last Christmas and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go in the 1980s.
It also covers the band’s farewell gig at London’s Wembley Stadium in June 1986, when they said goodbye to their fans and each other, before George embarked on his hugely successful solo career.
