This week in our Guardian Print Shop series we have an image of holidaymakers on Margate beach, shot by Ken Saunders
Apart from the subtle shifts in
fashion – the knee-length dresses and black-framed glasses that feel very much of their time – this scene could be playing out on Margate beach this very weekend. The Guardian photographer Ken Saunders – who covered all manner of traditional English life for the paper, from sleepy Cotswolds villages to the horse races and
Wimbledon – has captured the essence of
British holidaymakers at the seaside: clothes hitched, legs barely ankle deep in the sea, big smiles at the thrill of the water on bare feet. The strong shadows and smudged reflections on the wet sand suggest the sun was out, even in black and white.
