Hannah Brown makes some devastating cuts this week on "The Bachelorette" as we dive headfirst into the final stretch of the season.
Brown and the remaining seven contestants head to The Netherlands this week … and only four of them will make it to next week's hometown dates.
Will one of them be the villainous Luke? You know the answer to that already — but follow along to see how we got there. We hope you have tissues nearby and resist the urge to throw your remote.
The first date card goes to Jed. The pair explore Amsterdam together and adorably dance in the street. They also (casually and not at all staged, nope, no way) meet an elderly couple who have been together for more than 54 years … and only knew each other for 10 days before deciding to get married! This would be a lot cuter if it weren't for the controversy surrounding Jed's dating life prior to the show, but, you know, hindsight.
Hannah is eager to share her feelings with Jed, but she's having trouble opening up. She says in an aside, "I just don’t know what to say to these guys that I really have feelings for because, like, I don’t know how much is too much. I don’t know exactly how I feel. I don’t know. I don’t know."
But her metaphorical walls come down with him at dinner. She tells Jed she's falling in love with him. But how does she know?!
Hannah says that earlier in the day when they were dancing, he kicked up his heels and she tried to follow but screwed up. He told her they'd do it again, and in that moment she was laughing and everything around her was spinning. Then she saw his face and he kissed her. "It was in that moment that I was like 'Oh my gosh, this is real,'" she tells him, and brings us to near tears.
"My heart just fell through the earth," he tells her. Ugh, this is adorable, controversy be damned. Do we even have to say it? Of course he gets the rose.
Horseback riding timeHannah's second one-on-one date of the episode is with Tyler. The pair explore The Hague on horseback — but they don't exactly ride off into the sunset.
They have trouble getting their horses to move how they want. Hannah tells Tyler he needs to man up after he starts gagging on pickled herring they get from a food stand.
Hannah encourages him to open up and he delivers vulnerability on a silver platter at dinner: They talk about his parents' divorce and how his dad lost everything when the market crashed. Tyler's biggest fear is failing at marriage.
Hannah tells him she can relate. Her parents are still together but they don't communicate the way she wants to in her own marriage. This is definitely awkward if they're watching at home.
As we've seen before, vulnerability is rewarded: Tyler receives a rose.
"I feel like I am falling in love with you," he tells her. Yes!
We'll always have the sticky notesMike is getting the last one-on-one and Connor (remember the sticky notes?) is UPSET.
He goes to see Hannah and tells her he was disappointed to see his name wasn't on that final date card. She tells him that he's faded in the group dates; he tells her he's held on to the one-on-one date they did have together.
His pleas are not enough, though: Hannah says there's nothing bad about their time together but there are other relationships with stronger feelings involved.
“I didn't want this to be goodbye," Connor says. "It sucks that it is." He says in an aside that he's heartbroken. You know what, Connor? So are we.
Ugh: Hannah goes to the emergency room; Luke P. and Cam unravel
Mike check, 1-2-3Mike and Hannah go an artistic date — with an artist. They try their hands at drawing each other. (Mike gives her HUGE teeth.) And then the real artist paints them.
But what doesn't come across in the painting is how Hannah is feeling. Mike is always so open and honest with her, but she's not sure how she'd handle meeting his family.
In a supposed-to-be-emotional-but-actually-over-the-top-cheesy sequence, she later grows emotional in the Mauritshuis museum and starts crying while melancholy orchestral music overwhelms us. The drama!
"I’ve never been surrounded by so much beauty, and it’s just really overwhelming," she tells Mike. She describes one of the paintings as Saint Catherine holding a sword and a bible with men fighting in the background, which Hannah interprets as illustrating everything she's going through on the show.
Hannah tearfully tells him that she knows he has three ladies in his life and he wants his fourth, but that she's not it. Here's to Mike finding love as the next "Bachelor."
"Mike deserves to be loved fiercely, just as much as I do," Hannah tells the camera. Sing it.
And then there were two roses leftIt won't shock you that Luke is a jerk when the men are waiting to see if Mike is sent home. He says seeing Mike's suitcase leave would make his day.
"I mean, you guys are in my way. Just being completely real," he says. OK!
Peter, Garrett and Luke head to their three-on-one date. Luke steals her first, and Garrett jokes that he and Peter should take the two roses and run. Not a bad idea.
Once again, Luke manipulates the situation to make himself look like the victim. Hannah doesn't understand why people won't be kind to him. (How she misses it, we can't fathom).
Hannah confronts Garrett about supposedly being fake-nice to Luke, which he doesn't like.
Garrett tells Luke, "You're the fakest person I've ever met." Luke retorts: "You don't even know me."
Luke's soundbites grow even more angry as the pair bicker: "You disgust me. You make me want to gag."
He finally gets up in Garrett's face, like we've seen in previews. "I’ve been nothing but truthful with Hannah. And YOU are NOT gonna mess it up, OK?" Luke picks up a pile of (conveniently available) baloney and drops it on Garrett. "That’s what you’ve been saying to me and I’m tired of it," Luke says. We wish we were making this up.
Peter and Hannah meet briefly and it's enough to give him the rose (duh). She says in an aside that he's a nice break from the mess and the drama. Shouldn't that tell her something?
And then there was one rose leftGarrett and Luke go to dinner with Hannah, and Luke gets vulnerable again. He talks about his drinking, partying and sex-chasing past, and about a heavenly epiphany he once had in the shower. He knows he can be ready to get down on one knee soon.
When Garrett is up, he too gets vulnerable. He tells her he loves her! The first one on the show to tell her that. She kisses him. What's going to happen?!
You guessed it: She still picks Luke.
Garrett speaks for the audience in an aside: "Luke’s gonna keep saying what Hannah wants to hear. It’s gonna last for the rest of her life. She has no idea."
