The Bodyguard has even triggered a surge of visits to the UK's counter terror recruitment website.
David is assigned to protect ambitious home secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) and after her murder he was framed by underworld boss Luke Aitkens.
The former soilder – who has PTSD – wound up wearing a suicide vest tonight and his fellow police officers turned on him.
After an intense number of scenes, Nadia (Anjli Mohindra) was revealed to be the bomber who made the device that killed Julia and she planned the attack on David's children's school.
But The Bodyguard fans weren't too pleased with the ending.
"Great drama but @BBC why needlessly fuel Islamophobia by the twist?" one asked.
Another blasted: "Well, what a turn up for the books. Only few weeks ago former Foreign Sec @BorisJohnson likened Muslim women in niqaabs to letterboxes. Tonight, @BBCOne have elevated us to master bomb making, devious, sly puppet masters who ran circles around half of The Bodyguard cast."

And a third raged: "The Bodyguard final twist. Turns out the series is as scaremongering/racist as everyone feared at the start. Disappointing."
However, others loved the final surprise and didn't see it coming.
"Mind blown! Great series with so many twists!" one wrote.
"That was an unexpected twist!" another tweeted.
