North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has agreed to dismantle its main Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States takes reciprocal action, during a press conference today in Pyongyang.

Chairman Kim also agreed to permit international inspectors to observe the “permanent dismantlement” of its key missile facilities, including a test site and launch pad.
The Tonchang-ri missile pad is now expected to be closed permanently, but the dismantlement of the Yongbyon nuclear facility will be dependent on US actions.
Commenting on the agreement, Chairman Kim declared the two leaders had “made a firm commitment to exert active efforts to make the Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons and nuclear threat and turn it into a land of peace".
The two leaders also agreed to connect two rail lines along the east and west side of the peninsula, re-establishing connections between the two foes.
However, any re-establishment of transport links would require the prior approval of the US-led United Nations Command, which oversees the highly militarised border zone.
The announcement comes after the leaders of North and South Korea signed a joint statement on inter-Korean relations following their landmark summit today in Pyongyang, which reaffirmed their aims of working towards peace.
The North’s dictator stated the agreement will help improve relations between the two nations and will bring the countries closer to peace.
President Moon added the agreement should turn the Korean peninsula into a “land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear tests”.

Chairman Kim acknowledged the path to peace will not always be smooth, but vowed to overcome any stumbling blocks.
He said: “There is not only going to be a smooth road ahead, there will be challenged and trials, but the more we overcome them the stronger we will become.
“We are not afraid of future challenges.”
He also promised to visit the South Korean capital of Seoul in the near future, which would mark the first time a North Korean leader has visited the city.

President Moon stated his visit could take place within the year, barring unforeseen circumstances.
The South Korean leader is now expected to outline the details of his discussion with Chairman Kim to President Donald Trump during bilateral meetings next week.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert stated on Tuesday that Washington hopes the latest inter-Korean summit will bring about “meaningful, verifiable steps towards the denuclearisation of North Korea” and branded it a “historic opportunity”.
