POLICE have evacuated
Southgate tube station in north
London this evening after a “minor
explosion” and reports of a suspicious package.
People in the area are reportedly being told to stay indoors as officers work to determine the nature of the item.
Police said a “small number of people” have been treated for injuries by medics at the scene.
A witness near Southgate underground station told Express.co.uk seven people had been hurt, though emergency services have not confirmed the figure.
Another witness reported a burning rubber smell before passengers began to run for the station exit.
Parts of the Piccadilly line have been closed while police investigate.
Police, paramedics and specialist bomb detector dog units were scrambled to Southgate tube station just after 7pm.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were still working to establish the cause of the explosion.
The force said the blast “appears to have been minor”, adding it was not aware of any serious injury.
An earlier police statement said: “Met officers are dealing with a suspicious package at #Southgate tube station. Cordons are in place and officers remain at the scene.
“We will update with more info as we get it.”
A Twitter user with the handle @nakzokulah posted: “I was at Southgate Station when this commotion started.
“I could smell burning (like rubber) and saw multiple people hurrying for the exits. I was outside the station about to enter the 125 bus.
“Do not think this is fear mongering or fake news. It's very real.”
British Transport Police said: “We remain at Southgate Tube station in London following a reported minor explosion.
"A small number of people have been treated at the scene by @Ldn_Ambulance.
“No serious injuries reported and enquiries continue. Continue to follow @BTP and @metpoliceuk.”
The Piccadilly line is experiencing severe delays between Arnos Grove and Cockfosters. There are minor delays on the rest of the line.
