Get Out Star Daniel Kaluuya on Weird Stuff Said by White People
Making his late-night debut on ‘The Late Show,’ the actor also recalled being star-struck after meeting Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington.
Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya made his late-night debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night, where he explained how director Jordan Peele tried to "navigate the western world" and explore the "weird things" said by "white people" in his film.
The actor explained that Peele "tapped into a universal black truth navigating the western world." "We’re like, ‘White people say some really weird stuff to you. … White people say weird things,” Kaluuya said. Colbert then proceeded to ask what kind of “weird things” he could say to the actor, leaving Kaluuya to joke that the late-night host was “nervous” after noticing him playing with his nails. “This is how people watch Get Out,” Colbert joked, after the actor called him out.
As an example, Kaluuya offered the film's reassurance that people would have voted for Obama a third time. “The new version of that is 'I watched Get Out three times',” Kaluuya said. "So it's like, 'I'm so down,' or like, 'Steph Curry.'"
The actor also mentioned that he finds it weird when people in England talk to him using “London slang." “But they shouldn’t, because I understand English. … I’m bilingual you know,” Kaluuya explained.
Still reeling from the critical acclaim Get Out has received, Kaluuya explained that his biggest Hollywood moment was hugging Oprah. “I’m basically bulletproof,” the actor joked, also adding that it was Denzel Washington who introduced the two. “Looking at Denzel is like being in a movie. … You’re talking to me, but it’s like a VR movie sponsored by a really big telephone company,” Kaluuya said.
The actor explained that there is a photograph of the three of them posing together, but he has no idea what happened to the picture. “I was in a daze,” Kaluuya said. “You can’t ask someone to be normal when you meet Oprah and Denzel.” The actor also said that he’s simply “happy it exists.” “I don’t need to have it. I don’t need to hold it. It exists. That makes me happy.”
Colbert then joked that the picture is “like God,” for he doesn’t need proof to know it exists. “This is really going to piss off a lot of Christian people, specifically my mom,” Kaluuya said.
“God has seen Get Out four times,” Colbert joked.
