The streaming giant aired a commercial during the Emmys that finally explained the mysterious ads.
Remember those "Netflix is a Joke" billboards that popped up in neighborhoods is Los Angeles and New York earlier this month? It turns out they're part of a new campaign for the streaming giant's comedy lineup, as The Hollywood Reporter previously reported.
During the Emmy Awards on Sunday, Netflix aired a spot during a commercial break that featured its top stand-ups — Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock — interacting with its buzziest shows and their stars, including Stranger Things, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and The Crown.
The elaborate advertising scheme is Netflix's way of promoting its stand-up specials — both new and old. Chappelle, Louis C.K., Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Tracy Morgan have all had specials on the platform in the past year, and Seinfeld and Rock have upcoming ones. In fact, Jerry Before Seinfeld debuts Tuesday.
