Did well on Ciaran Brady in the first half, but struggled on Gerard Smith in the second. 6 Read more: Recap as Cavan stun Monaghan in Ulster SFC opener to set up quarter-final clash with Tyrone Ryan O’Toole : One of Monaghan best man-markers was deployed on Oisin Brady and, while Brady only scored one from play, he might have been better utilised on Lynch. 7 Karl O’Connell: Scored a fine point and played a delightful pass that created Conor McCarthy’s goal chance that was finished by Michael Hamill. 7 Killian Lavelle: His switch to the heart of the Monaghan defence has been largely successful, but Paddy Lynch proved a handful on Sunday. 5.5 Conor McCarthy : Crashed one shot off the post and had a shot on goal saved by Gary O’Rourke. Monaghan’s early exit won’t have done him any favours as the All-Star defender needs game-time. 6.5 Gary Mohan: Distribution wasn’t always great and didn’t win as much primary possession as he would have liked. 6 Darren Hughes: Made three excellent interceptions in quick succession including a perfect tackle on Ciaran Brady. His injury robbed Monaghan of that safety blanket and Cavan plundered three goals in his absence. 7.5 Ciaran McNulty: Worked hard around the middle third without exerting any major influence on proceedings. 6 Kevin Loughran: Ought to have done better with his goal chance in the first half and his hesitation allowed O’Rourke to smoother his shot. 5.5 Jason Irwin: No lack of effort, but it wasn’t Irwin’s day on Sunday. Called over overcarrying and was booked after just 17 minutes and replaced at half-time. 5 David Garland: Scored one of the best points of the first half, but didn’t get much change from Cian Reilly and was called ashore after 52 minutes. 6.5 Jack McCarron: Couldn’t follow up from Loughran’s goal chance and only scored one point from play, albeit a cracking score. Was well marshalled by Killian Brady. 6 Conor McManus : Showed glimpses of his class in the first half when cutting inside Brian O’Connell and firing over the bar. Converted two frees as well, but faded in the second half. 6.5 Subs Michael Hamill: Came on for Irwin for the second half and reacted well to finish Monaghan’s only goal. 6.5 Joel Wilson: Called in to replace the injured Darren Hughes and took and converted a mark in the second half. 6.5 Sean Jones : Looked lively when introduction for Garland midway through the second half and scored a mark. 6.5 Micheal Bannigan: Not on long enough to be rated. Cavan ratings Gary O’Rourke: Came off his line well to deny Kevin Loughran in the first half. One early kick-out went astray, but otherwise excellent. 8 Cian Reilly: Send out to mark David Garland and held him to just one point from play in the first half. 7 Killian Brady : Lost Jack McCarron for one audacious efforts in the first half before giving a masterclass in defending thereafter. 8 Brian O’Connell: Couldn’t get near Conor McManus in the first half. Fared better in the second and scored one point himself. 7 Padraig Faulkner: Took his goal like a corner-forward. Cavan’s joint-captain led by example, including throwing himself into a collision which resulted in Darren Hughes and James Smith leaving the field. 8.5 Niall Carolan: Won plenty of possession for Cavan and used it well. Also played the final ball for Lynch’s goal. 7 Conor Brady: Mixed afternoon for Brady. Was solid in defence, but unable to wield his usual influence going forward and was turned over by Darren Hughes early in the second half. 6.5 James Smith: Struggled to make his presence felt at midfield and was forced off moments after the hit between himself, Darren Hughes and Padraig Faulkner. 6 Oisin Kiernan (Denn): Worked hard around the midfield, but it didn’t happen for the Denn clubman and he was replaced after 44 minutes. 6 Ciaran Brady: A solid effort from Cavan’s other joint-captain. Won plenty of possession around the middle third and set up Gerard Smith for his pont. 7 Gerard Smith: Excellent exchange with Cormac O’Reilly before burying his goal past Rory Beggan and also landed a point from play. 7.5 Oisin Kiernan (Castlerahan): Was under orders from Raymond Galligan to mind the D and did reasonably well. 6.5 Cian Madden: Was off target with two effort and failed to score and was well marked by Ryan Wylie. 5.5 Paddy Lynch - Star Man: The top-scorer in Division Two in the League, Paddy Lynch picked up where he left off. Scored 1-9 and led the line for a famous Cavan win. 9 Cavan's Paddy Lynch kicks a point (Image: ©INPHO/John McVitty) Oisin Brady: Landed one point from play and worked hard. Had a fine battle with Ryan O’Toole throughout. 6.5 Subs: Luke Fortune: Was called on when James Smith got injured, but lack of recent game-time showed. 5 Tiernan Madden: Introducted for Oisin Kieran (Denn) after 44 minutes, but failed to make an impact. 5 Cormac O’Reilly: A great cameo from Cormac O’Reilly as he set up Smith’s goal and won a free moments later. 7 Ryan Donohoe: Not on long enough to be rated Sign up to our free sports newsletter to get the latest headlines to your inbox Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks.
