SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Club Car Championship at the Landings on Skidaway Island has been growing ever since it first came to the area in 2018. With that growth comes the need for more volunteers. This year, over 500 people are registered to volunteer at the tournament. Many of them say they look forward to it every year. “You get to be involved in something that you probably never would otherwise, so it’s a great time for all,” Roni Mekle said. Their jobs range from welcoming people at the admissions tent, transportation, fun and games, and serving food and drinks to spectators. Mekle is proud to be out here, especially knowing she’s volunteering at a tournament that gives back to local charities. “Everybody benefits from it. It’s fun. It’s worthwhile cause you can get out and enjoy a beautiful day on a beautiful course,” Mekle said. Gayle Bina is the smiling face that welcomes you to the admission tent. This is her fifth year volunteering. “It’s such a good thing for Savannah and for everybody. A lot of people come in, and they don’t know what to expect or where to go or what’s happening. We make everybody feel welcome,” she said.
