Pep Guardiola couldn't fulfil. Messi wanted to be sure that Sergio Aguero was staying at
Manchester City before he agreed to join the club in 2021 - but Guardiola couldn't promise this. At the time, Messi was still at Barcelona, playing what would be his last season there. He was strongly linked with a move to City because of problems with his relationship with the
Catalan club. Argentine news outlet El Chiringuito report that a move to the
Premier League was very likely. They said Messi was eager to team up with his international teammate Aguero and former manager Guardiola. However, Guardiola couldn't meet Messi's demand. Aguero left the club that summer and signed for
Barcelona - while Man City later made a big effort to sign Erling Haaland. Paris Saint-Germain last summer. He had a successful 21-year career at Barca, where he won 24 major trophies including the
Champions League four times and the Club
World Cup three times, reports the Mirror . Messi scored 672 goals in 778 games and won many individual awards. He played under Guardiola for four years at Barcelona, winning the Champions League twice and La Liga three times. Messi bid farewell to Barcelona at the close of the 2020/21 term, deciding to team up again with old partner Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Meanwhile, Guardiola let Aguero go from City, opting instead for a fresh face in the form of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund bought for £51.2million. Six months after signing with Barcelona , Aguero made a sudden retirement due to doctor's orders while Messi faced some initial bumps during his debut season at PSG but found his stride as time went on. After winning Ligue 1 twice, he left PSG at season's end. Currently, Messi is waving his magic at Major League Soccer's Inter Miami club. With an impressive scoreline of 11 goals in 14 matches in the 2023 season, helping the Herons bag the Leagues Cup, Messi has changed the game for Inter Miami despite a recent break owing to a hamstring strain. Talking about Messi's decision to move to Miami, co-owner Jorge Mas told The Times: "It was very difficult to compete solely on an economic basis but we had our city, what it represents, but also a place where his family could enjoy themselves. Miami is the unofficial capital of the Americas, a bilingual city. The majority of the population is Hispanic from south and central America and I think that was an extremely attractive thing for Lionel." Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks.
