At Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) our workforce is at the heart of our mission to provide exceptional rural health care to the communities we serve in Vermont, northern Berkshire County, Massachusetts and eastern
New York. Every position at SVMC, from clinical to administrative staff, is central to the patient experience and our ability to respond to the community’s health needs. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to provide all our employees opportunities for professional development, career advancement and rewarding personal growth. This April, as we mark Career Month, we’re highlighting a few ways your career can reach new heights when you’re part of our SVMC team. As the largest employer in southwestern Vermont, SVMC has always been focused on attracting and retaining excellent clinical and non-clinical staff to our hospital, regional
cancer center and 25 primary care and specialty practice sites. Our more than a decade of partnership with Dartmouth Health has had a significant impact on our ability to recruit and retain providers. Last year, we welcomed 25 new physicians and advanced practice providers. Since the SVMC integration with Dartmouth Health in 2023, opportunities for recruitment, career advancement and training, at all levels, has grown and will continue to do so. SVMC has
Job opportunities open to every level of educational experience and background, with robust on-the-job training for those new to health care. While you don’t need a big degree to work in health care, we will support you in earning a degree, if that’s your goal. All SVMC employees, half-time or above are eligible for tuition assistance of up to $5,000 annually after six months of employment, to pursue a degree to further their career. Our Foundation also offers a variety of scholarships to staff pursuing specific degrees. A skilled and compassionate nursing workforce is what made SVMC Vermont’s first Magnet hospital for nursing excellence and the state’s only five-time designee. We pride ourselves on investing in excellence. Often, the two largest barriers to those who wish to pursue a nursing career are time and money, so SVMC offers several programs aimed at removing those barriers and giving new nurses the support they need to succeed, long-term. Nursing scholarships, through our Foundation, are open to all and benefit approximately ten nursing students each year. For those worried about finding the time for both work and education, the RN Pathway Program allows full-time staff to maintain pay and benefits, while working reduced hours as they pursue an Associate of Science in Nursing degree. This program to “earn while you learn” is made possible through a grant from the Vermont Agency of Human Services and partnerships with CCV, VTSU, VSAC, and the VBRT Foundation. For new graduates, the RN New Graduate Residency Program is a 12 month program that utilizes classroom activities and hands on practice to develop the nurse’s knowledge and skills. This program also offers loan forgiveness of up to $60,000.00 of nursing debt payable over six years, if the student graduated in 2020 to the current date. SVMC will also pay for all nurses who want to achieve their Bachelor’s Degree through the Colby Sawyer College ADN to BSN program. Finally, SVMC believes in lifelong learning and continuing education. Our affiliation as a Dartmouth Health member hospital and partnership with state agencies gives our staff access to a number of free educational opportunities throughout the year. These trainings are a great way to expand knowledge base and uncover new interests that can lead to new paths and pursuits. Our staff, patients and our communities all benefit from the development of our workforce at SVMC. We’re also constantly reviewing ways we can do better and grow in the future.
