Liverpool loanees Tyler Morton and Fabio Carvalho combined yesterday for Hull City’s equaliser against Leeds but could not prevent their side succumbing to late defeat at Elland Road. The pair have impressed in their loan spells at the Tigers as they bid to put themselves in contention to be key components in the post-Klopp era at Liverpool. Morton, who joined Hull on loan in September, danced past a number of Leeds defenders before pulling back a cross for Carvalho to skilfully convert and level the game at 1-1. That strike saw the Portuguese forward register his fifth goal in thirteen appearances for Liam Rosenior’s side. Carvalho joined Hull’s ranks in January following a tricky loan spell at RB Leipzig.
Liverpool have enjoyed a good relationship with the Tigers of late. “The reason he’s at Liverpool is because he’s got enormous potential and I can’t thank them enough for trusting us,” . “Liverpool have seen the work we’ve done with Tyler Morton.” In February, of the work both clubs have done: “It’s so good to see. Fabio and Tyler are doing really well. It’s so nice to see Fabio completely confident again. Both are pretty dominant players, involved in a lot of moments. [The] development of both is fantastic”. Morton has made 32 league appearances this campaign, contributing three goals and five assists. His venture into the Leeds box on Monday was a departure from his typical role in defensive midfield, and the poise and dribbling skills displayed in his assist demonstrated 21-year-old's range of ability. Carvalho, meanwhile, converted the cross with a masterly flick past Illan Meslier. Also 21 years old, he has started all 13 games for Hull since his January arrival. This is in stark contrast to his fortunes at Leipzig, where he made only three starts and played just 11% of available minutes (compared to 94% so far at Hull). Liverpool recalled the youngster from
Germany at the end of December, when it was clear that the loan move was not working out for any party. “Fabio was able to quickly integrate himself here, but both parties had expected more from his time here – especially Fabio in terms of his playing time,” . “Due to the quality and competition within our squad at his position, we are unable to guarantee this for him. We held several discussions over the last days and in the end, decided to end his loan early.” He added: “We would like to thank Fabio for his efforts at RBL and wish him all the best for the future.” Carvalho has enjoyed a productive few months on the east coast and following his strike against West Brom earlier in the season. “His mentality is humble. He wants to work,” said Rosenior. “I have to drag him off the training pitch every day... He’s just so humble, and he’s going to have a great career because he’s got the right mentality.” Morton, who won EFL Young Player of the Month in December, has had a similarly positive impact at the Championship club as he enjoys a second productive season in the division, having spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder attracted attention for his impressive performance in the tough away fixture at high-flying Leeds, which was broadcast on Sky Sports. As well as his assist, Morton contested ten ground duels, completed two of his three dribbles, and had 85% pass accuracy. Speaking a few months into the current season, . “When I saw Tyler play on loan at Blackburn last season, I fell in love with him straightaway,” he said. “He is everything I like in a midfield player... he won’t like me saying this because he’s a Liverpool boy, but he reminds me so much of Michael Carrick.” Both players are set to return to Liverpool for pre-season in the summer, where they will look to impress the Reds’ new manager and coaching staff. The incoming staff will assess what value the pair could add to the first team squad. Morton featured fleetingly under Klopp in the 2021/22 season, including being trusted enough to start away at
Tottenham Hotspur. He could provide good depth in midfield, though there is huge competition for places in that position with the emergence of Bobby Clark and James McConnell, the return of Stefan Bajcetic and 2023’s four summer signings, not to mention established young stars Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. Carvalho could provide a different option out wide or in attacking midfield for the new boss, having featured across the frontline for Klopp at the beginning of the difficult 2022/23 season. The duo will look to power the Tigers into an unlikely play-off spot in the final seven matches of the season. Hull currently sit in tenth, six points off sixth-placed Norwich with a game in hand. A poor run with no wins in their last six has put a sizable dent in their promotion hopes. The Liverpool duo are next in action against Cardiff City on Saturday 6 April.
