Although it can be very dangerous, urban explorers go to derelict places they never previously would have been allowed in. One of those places is RAF Upwood , which has been mostly derelict since 1994. Not all visitors to the former RAF base are coming with harmless curiosity – it has also been the target of arson attacks, with the most recent incident involving a
fire in July 2023. One particular area of interest on the site is Upwood Hill House, which predates the airfield. It was used by the MOD for accommodation and is believed to have housed two families. Urban explorers who have visited the site in the last five years have described it as 'heavily graffitied'. Photographs of the house show that many of the windows are broken, with doors falling off their hinges and plants growing into the house. Inside, the tiled and carpeted floors are covered in dirt and debris, including broken glass. Some of the floorboards have collapsed, with ceilings also beginning to fall down. Altogether, the house has been in a sad decline since its last residents packed their boxes and moved out. You can see that the house would have been a lovely place to live in its heyday, with big windows and interesting features including stained glass. It also seems to have a spooky atmosphere, with at least one group of 'ghost hunters' recording their visit to the house online. They said it was a "great source of paranormal activity". They claimed their photographs showed "unexplained orbs, lights, figures and other unexplained images" – the more cynical among us can probably find other explanations for these phenomena.
