has teamed up once again with the director who urged her to film “taboo breaking” sex scenes. La La Land star Emma is appearing in Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest blockbuster Kinds of Kindness, alongside her Poor Things co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. Yorgos was the one to encourage Emma to step into her saucy role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things. The film takes place in three parts – one following a man “without choice who tries to take control of his own life”, a “policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person” and a “woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.” It comes after Emma smashed taboos with her various sex scenes in Poor Things, which eventually won her an Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards. trailer, released this week, sees Emma’s character driving a fast car before a mysterious corpse is dragged around a corridor. It looks set to be a lush exploration of the modern day – and, yes, involves a saucy snogging scene from the get-go. And Emma’s signed up even after confessing that one aspect of filming Lanthimos’ last movie “made her want to puke”. One scene required her to scoff as many as 60 Portuguese tarts, and when asked what the most challenging part was, she said: “Figuring out how to walk or eat 60 Portuguese tarts, which the first bite is delicious, but by the end you really want to puke." Emma added at an
Academy Awards panel: “Or her seeing death and decay for the first time, much more challenging than the nudity, which is the only thing people want to seem to ask me about." Emma said she was “naked all the time” on set to “honour” her horny character. She said: “The sexuality of Bella was another part of that, and the way that that was going to be shot and how we were going to do it and our incredible intimacy coordinator and our closed sets and all of that. In some ways, that was the easiest part because that was choreographed. Those were quick. We knew exactly what we were doing." But her Poor Things co-star Mark Ruffalo worried he was “too old” to star in sex scenes with the younger Emma. The 56-year-old confessed to Perfect magazine: “I didn’t know if I could pull this off. I’ve never done anything like this before. So, like, the sex scenes… Am I too old to be doing that kind of stuff? Does anyone want to see that?"
