Work on one of Plymouth's most famous buildings, the Guildhall, is moving forward. Last year work to improve the facade of the north side and the west tower was carried out. Now is set to start work on the front of the Guildhall. Some TLC will be given to the wave-shaped awning over the front doors as well as repairs to the stonework, as has been completed on the northern elevation. The Guildhall, which includes the Great Hall, Assize Courts and City Treasury, was first built in the 1870s. However, it was almost destroyed during the Blitz. The buildings were saved from being knocked down by a single Council vote in 1951. They became a key part of Plymouth's rebuilding and are the most important surviving structures from the bombed city centre. Cllr Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing, Co-operative Development and Communities, said: "The first two phases of the Guildhall facelift have made such a difference to what is a magnificent building. This next stage will complete the
Job and ensure that the Guildhall remains in great shape for years to come." Work started at the end of last year to repair the stonework on all sides of the building. Old cement used in previous repairs has been replaced with a lime render that would have been used in the past. This allows the building to breathe better. This latest phase of the project will cost £291,500. This is part of a previously approved budget of £750,000. Not only is the outside of the building getting a makeover, but a big transformation is also planned for the inside.
