In therapy when we speak of growth, we aren’t talking of planting flowers or seeds in your garden. We are referring to growth of character, the lessons we learn in life through adversity. When we explore growth, we are holding space for the struggles we overcome, promoting strength of character, self-belief and resilience in conquering these challenges. A growth mindset is the belief that no matter what we are experiencing, we will get through. It is the belief that our skills and strengths can be improved with effort and deliberate practice. A growth mindset is the ability to see a situation or problem from a different perspective, to see the learning in the situation. Having a growth mindset means you are safe in the knowledge no matter the outcome [that] everything will be ok, and you will bounce back from setbacks. Practicing a growth mindset may make you more likely to explore how you can get better at doing something. It is the belief you can improve your abilities by practising, or by finding a different way to achieve your goal. Believing in yourself is not only important for positive mental health, it is also critical for achieving success in all areas of your life. When you believe in your own abilities and strengths, you will become more confident, accepting of what comes your way and motivated to achieve your goals and live a fulfilled and satisfied life. These positive attributes can lead to healthier relationships, peak productivity/work performance, higher self-worth and improved general mood and wellbeing. Here are a few pointers to practice a growth mindset: 1. Keep the mind active. Research shows that learning creates new connections in the brain. The brain forms new connections when we develop new skills or learn something new. Keep nurturing your mind with activity to build these new connections and keep it healthy. 2. Understand the concept of mindsets. Both a negative and positive mindset each comes with problems. A positive mindset is unrealistic and unachievable therefore setting us up for failure. A negative mindset will rarely produce a positive outcome, however, a growth mindset ensures that regardless if the situation is positive or negative, we can learn from it and everything will be ok. 3. Practice resilience. If things are tough do not give up, even when you find something difficult or frustrating. We now know that the brain adapts to new information, and through time, a new connection will form. Reflect on the challenges you have faced in life. How have you overcome these challenge? Simple acknowledgments can promote a growth mindset. 4. Celebrate mistakes. It is natural to associate shame and fear around mistakes, however if we change the outlook, we will diminish those negative emotions. We all make mistakes, so try to embrace these mistakes and use them as learning opportunities rather than feeling embarrassed about them. If we are not making mistakes, then we are not stretching ourselves. Following these steps and planting these small seeds can have big results. Explore how you have grown together over the past few years, acknowledge the achievements and challenges that have been overcome, and celebrate how even through difficult times, with the right support we can all continue to grow and flourish. Remember, from little seeds grow mighty trees. Raye review – a triumphant act of independence and naked ambition
Sep 27, 2023
Royal Albert Hall, LondonBacked by the Heritage Orchestra, Raye’s hard-fought songs have extra drama, especially when, with radical vulnerability, she sings in her underwear‘No string section, no tiny violin,” goes Raye’s Oscar Winning Tears. She glances over her shoulder and behind her, in a divine sense of irony, is the entire Heritage Orchestra. For one night only at the Royal Albert Hall, the dreams of Rachel Keen are reclaimed in glorious Technicolor: a live, recorded performance of her debut album My 21st Century Blues on a scale befitting the vision she has fought for almost a decade to execute. Having been cuffed to Polydor for seven years, who allowed her (now Mercury-nominated) record to stagnate while they doled out her talents for daiquiri-syrup dance hits, tonight’s operatic reimagining is a triumphant statement of independence. It makes for an incredible collision of worlds: the orchestra bleeds into Raye’s south London DNA, bringing the inherent drama of her music into sharp relief. Fortified by the thrill of strings and an entire choir, the hypnotic dance track Black Mascara reaches biblical levels of retribution. In an album laced with trauma, this musical heft matches the weight of its emotion. Mary Jane, a stripped-back confessional that grapples with addiction, is now replete with lavish saxophone solos and guitar riffs. Raye makes no attempt to hide her enchantment, waving her arms as if conducting the symphony herself, relishing every twist and turn. Punctuated with costume changes from one timeless gown to another, it feels like the realisation of a childhood fantasy. Continue reading...
