How much money building works will cost for major regeneration projects in Grimsby has been revealed. North East Lincolnshire Council picked construction firm Morgan Sindall to undertake the design, procurement, building and redevelopment of the western end of Freshney Place shopping centre. The council awarded a contract worth £21.2m on March 7 and it began three days later. The Freshney Place redevelopment will see a five-screen cinema, new market hall, food hall, public landscaping and leisure space created. It was given planning permission in February. Parkway Cinemas signed its lease agreement with the council to run the future Grimsby cinema earlier this month. Read more : Lights, camera, action on Grimsby cinema plan as lease is signed and work due to start Morgan Sindall's contract runs until November 4, 2025, in line with the council's aim for the redevelopment to be completed by late 2025. The contract is also split into two phases, between a pre-construction services agreement and phase two, the works. "We believe this project will be a real game-changer for Grimsby and will breathe new life into the shopping centre," said Morgan Sindall area director Ben Hall when the company was announced as the construction firm hired for the project on Monday, March 20, by Grimsby Live . Work is set to start in the summer with the demolition of the existing frontage of the former BHS unit, and Flottergate Mall to make way for a new market hall. Back in September , the latest overall projected cost for the project was £30.9m, made by Queensberry Real Estate on the council's behalf. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's budget a week ago produced the surprise announcement of £20m government cash to support the Freshney Place scheme. It is not the only significant regeneration project in Grimsby with recently published contract details. In February, the council awarded £1.8m for phase two of the redevelopment of Riverhead Square to Hessle-based civil engineering firm CR Reynolds. (Image: GrimsbyLive/Donna Clifford) Adjacent to Freshney Place, the open area will be remodelled with seating, lighting, more green space and a flexible event space. In 2020, £3.3m government cash was secured for the project through Grimsby's Town Deal. Work on phase two began on Monday, March 20. This follows hoarding going up to screen the works and contain dust two months earlier. A published contract notice from December reveals PBS Construction North East was awarded £39,000 to erect the hoarding. Speaking as phase two construction work was to begin, North East Lincolnshire Council's leader Cllr Philip Jackson said: "This scheme will create a much more pleasant area for our residents and businesses and encourage more people to use the town centre." (Image: North East Lincolnshire Council) In recent weeks, the council has also via its regeneration partner Equans awarded £735,000 for repairs and maintenance of Holme Hill clock tower. The former Holme Hill School, more recently known as the Education Development Centre, is Grade 2 listed. It has been in disuse for some time and in November, the council's cabinet approved plans to refurbish the whole building to allow it to be used as a hub for the council and its partners in children and family services. Five other council premises would be closed after the refurbishment's completion, allowing cost savings to be made. Hull-based Geo Houlton & Sons Ltd has been awarded a 14-month contract starting in April to refurbish and conserve the clock tower. Funding for the clock tower's restoration has already been secured as part of the council's 'Heritage at Risk' programme, separate from the overall site refurbishment ambitions. Other major contracts issued by North East Lincolnshire in recent weeks include £150,000 to Brough-based Eskimo Soup Ltd for the promotion of new tobacco dependency services and £200,000 towards the Grimsby Renewables Exploratorium scheme . The exploratorium, to be between Freshney Place and Alexandra Dock, will allow children and families to interact and learn about low carbon and renewables. The first £50,000 will be spent on professional fees to work out the design and planning of the centre.
