Whether they're simply very small or aren't close enough to Cambridge, we think one specifically deserves more attention than it gets. Located only three miles east of Huntingdon, Hemingford Abbots is surrounded by sweeping countryside and the Great River Ouse. It is most usually partnered with the neighbouring village of Hemingford Grey but now it is finally being recognised for its own beauty. In the recent shortlisting announcements by Muddy Stilettos for the UK's best place to live, Hemingford Abbot is up for the winning spot in the county with nine other Cambridgeshire locations . Here are some of the things you might not know about this picture-postcard pretty village. Whopping house prices Hemingford Abbots in Huntingdonshire is up to be named the UK's best place to live (Image: Cambridge News) With all its beauty and closeness to Cambridge (17 miles), the house prices here are unsurprisingly quite pricy. Average price is a hefty £1,160,000 and prices are up 23% year-on-year. So this place is definitely popular and that popularity is only increasing year-on-year. Nearby Huntingdon, around four miles away, has direct trains to
London which takes around 48 minutes which possibly affects the prices too. A traditional 500-year old-country pub serving quality, locally sourced food, this place has nice written all over it. The formal dining area, country snug and main bar with wood burning stoves, traditional decor and large pub garden all make this pub stand out. Many visitors come to enjoy the river and the peaceful walks in the meadows, especially in Spring and Summer. Much of the village is in the Conservation Area of Huntingdonshire. The village is surrounded by meadows, so scenic walks won’t be a problem. Stroll along the river to the National Trust’s Houghton Mill , the last working watermill on the River Great Ouse or bike to Fen Drayton lakes. Romans and Anglo Saxons Such a picturesque village undoubtedly has some amazing history and Hemingford Abbots goes all the way back to the Ancient Romans. A Roman sarcophagus was found in the area proving that it was a Roman settlement at one point in time. Walking around the village, you can see remnants of the past everywhere with a variety of preserved thatched 16th and 17th century cottages and barns and also the architecturally important buildings such as the Manor House, Old Rectory and Hemingford Park.
