Flowers , chocolates , gifts, the list really is endless and that list includes cupcakes. Sweet icing and a fluffy texture can combine to put a smile on anyone’s face and cupcakes come in different flavours too. Chocolate, lemon, strawberry, you name it, someone’s probably made a cupcake for it. Ahead of Mother’s Day, I had the enviable task of reviewing cupcakes from six different supermarkets . Tesco , M&S , Asda , Aldi , Morrisons and Sainsbury’s all have their own cupcakes… but which one has the best? Read more: Customer's rant after Solihull pub serves steak pie with only 'three cubes of meat' Tesco Tesco cupcake £4.50 for a pack of six Looks aren’t everything, having said that, I chose the most attractive cupcake to the eye straight away in Tesco. It looked the part with a swirling colourful design on the icing. As much as the icing was lovely, it overpowered the rest of the cake to warrant a higher score. It was a very good effort, hampered by icing. 4/5 Marks & Spencer M&S cupcake £2 for a pack of six I could have gone with strawberry, lemon or plain icing. I opted for lemon for something a little different and it was... fine. A very standard cupcake that does the icing and the cake good, but nothing struck me out as great. Not a bad effort but nothing to push it for a higher score. 3.5/5 Aldi Aldi cupcake £2.59 for pack of six The Aldi cupcakes were described to have a hidden centre so I went for chocolate. Unsurprisingly, the hidden centre was more chocolate. A nice cupcake where the ingredients stood out well and both the icing and cake complimented each other. A strong effort from Aldi. 4/5 Asda Asda cupcake £2 for pack of four Looks can be deceiving on this and that applies to cupcakes too. I went for strawberry out of the flavoured options, I didn’t think orange would do as well. The icing on this cupcake left an unexpectedly sour aftertaste which may divide customers. Other than that, it was another standard cupcake. 3.5/5 Morrisons Morrisons cupcake £1.79 for a pack of two In the cupcake game, sometimes you need to stand out to separate yourself from the competition. Morrisons did exactly that, with a strawberry filling, you’re getting another layer, and it just works. Without that strawberry filling, it’s already solid, but the filling is what you will remember this cupcake for. You could even say that the filling was the icing on the cake... I'll see myself out. 4.5/5 Sainsbury's Sainsbury's cupcake £4 for a pack of six This is the type of cupcake that you would present to your mother or mother-in-law, it looks the part and definitely would get you in the good books. It was a gorgeous cupcake on the outside, but was it a five star rating on the inside? The short answer is no - but it was close. The icing was great, but once again, the rest of the cake did not do enough for me. 4/5 Overall What I’ve learnt today on my cupcake journey is the importance of icing and how to use it well. If it overpowers the rest of the cupcake, you might as well just eat icing (which admittedly does sounds nice). Of course, this is just an opinion. You might try these and rearrange the list from top to bottom. But with that strawberry filling, Morrisons really does cut through the rest of the competition in my eyes. And with only two cupcakes at £1.79, it’s a cheaper, lighter alternative to the other options ahead of Mother's Day.
