Alessandra Korap of the Munduruku tribe in the
Amazon was awarded the 2020 Robert F. Kennedy
Human Rights prize for her work defending the rights, ancestral lands and culture of indigenous people in
Brazil.
"This prize is not for me alone, it is for all of Brazil's indigenous peoples that are crying out for help," the 36-year-old said in a telephone interview.
The $30,000 award was presented to her by the former U.S. senator's daughter, Kerry Kennedy, in a virtual ceremony from
Washington at which keynote speaker former U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry praised her courage.
