At any point in time, I usually have on the counter a coffee bean grinder, an espresso machine, a coffee maker, and several coffee-specific measuring spoons and espresso tampers. I only drink espresso, my wife only has coffee. And we both like it freshly ground and brewed every morning. But I think I’ve found a solution. De’Longhi is letting me try out its new Magnifica Evo Espresso Machine right now. It has a fairly small footprint, can sit on the counter yet comfortably underneath the above cabinet, and literally takes the place of everything coffee-related we had on the counter, but in a smaller and much more attractive way. There’s notably more room to actually cook dinner. What’s really nice about it is the photo-labeled buttons up top. I just push the espresso button and it makes a cup quickly – either by grinding the coffee beans it stores up top or by me dispensing a scoop of ground coffee in a small pocket. Either way, it works quickly and produces a nice hot shot. Grinding can be a little noisy, but no more so than any other machine – via the built-in conical burr grinder that features 13 settings. And when my wife comes downstairs, I just make her a cup of coffee. There’s also a strength setting, as well as a 2X button for when you want a double shot. Which is always, in my case. In fact, there are seven devoted beverage buttons to choose from. Most involve using milk and the built-in frother. To be honest, we don’t drink milk so I didn’t even try using the frother for this article. But I have no doubt it works fine. What I do take advantage of, however, is lowering the adjustable neck of the dispenser to create more crema on top of my espresso. Far and away, the very best part of this machine – other than the consistently outstanding coffee I’ve been able to brew – is the easy cleanup. It collects pucks of coffee grounds in a basket. And then after about eight drinks or so, it prompts you to empty the basket. I dump the grounds in our banana plant outside, which has helped it grow nicely. Believe me, this is way better than cleaning excess coffee grounds off our counter everyday, tapping the espresso portafilter against the garbage can to empty it, and banging the coffee filter basket and against the inside of a garbage pail. I had been doing this routine several times a day, and it was old — so messy and wasteful. The De’Longhi has been a lifesaver along these lines. And by the way, parts are removable and dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning.

When you power on and off the machine, it flushes the pipes inside and water drips out for three seconds or so. That’s to keep the coffee tasting good and the machine clean and working well. Although the tray catches those drops, I prefer to just put my empty coffee mug below the spouts, to collect the water. The unit I tested also flashed me error messages several times regarding grind size. I phoned a tech support person at De’Longhi who can connect via video chat — very cool — and he figured out the issue.
