HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) — District 1 Rep. Nancy Mace is fighting to keep her seat at the table — a crowded group of four other
Republicans and two
Democrats were up against her. On Thursday, she stopped by Hudson’s Seafood on Hilton Head to tout her accomplishments to voters. “I can promise you no one will work harder than we will for the Lowcountry because it’s personal. It means something. And I want folks here to be proud of the work that we accomplish,” Mace said. She said what sets her apart from her challengers is her ability to put politics aside. She raved about the bipartisan bills she’s worked with Democrats to pass and bring results to the Lowcountry. “We’ve gotten over 500 million and resources appropriated or authorized for the district, including the Hilton Head Island Airport, resources for that or the cybersecurity hub, water infrastructure, stormwater,” Mace said. Angie Benson is a mom and the spouse of a retired veteran. The Independent said Mace’s authenticity is something that stands out. When Mace speaks she listens and believes her. “If you listen to a lot of politicians speak, and I do because I like to go hear what they have to say, you get a lot of jargon language,” Benson said. “And I think she does a really good
Job of giving straightforward answers. And I think she thinks through her responses before she talks.” However, Mace’s national spotlight has come under
fire by some of her challengers. They claim that Mace is more focused on D.C. Instead, turning her back on the people she’s supposed to represent. However, Mace disputed that instead saying that putting South Carolina voices into the public sphere is crucial. “We have a lot of leaders that are on the national stage, including
Nikki Haley, including Tim Scott, including Lindsey Graham, you know, and myself,” Mace said. “And I think that a lot of folks that I talked to are proud to see leadership at our level from our state on the national stage, guiding policy.” The primary for South Carolina’s first congressional seat will happen on June 11.
