Liverpool’s win over
Crystal Palace lays down a marker to
Manchester City because it shows the Reds can win via any means.
That’s the view of Liverpool captain
James Milner who netted a penalty in the 2-0 victory at
Selhurst Park on Monday night.
Sadio Mane bagged a late second as Liverpool made it two wins from two in the
Premier League having previously beaten West Ham 4-0.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been tipped to be Manchester City’s closest rivals for the title this season and both sides have earned six points from their opening two games.
Crystal Palace had been considered a ‘bogey’ team for Liverpool, with the Eagles winning four of the previous ten encounters between the two sides.
But Liverpool ignored that record on Monday and Milner believes it shows a different, meaner side to the Anfield outfit.
“It’s a positive start,” Milner said.
“We need to be able to win all types of games but it’s early days.
“We want to get off to the best possible start and to win at home and win away is obviously the best start we can have.
“We want to keep the clean sheets then with the players we’ve got up top we’ve always got a chance of scoring.
“We always defend as a team so I’m sure credit will go to the keeper and the defence but it’s the whole side who defend together.”
Although Liverpool are seen as genuine title contenders to Manchester City this season, Klopp isn’t the least bit fussed.
“It's very early. I couldn't care less really,” Klopp said.
“We are not in a race with other Premier League teams each weekend.
“I was not 100 per cent sure tonight in the first half that we would score.
“You have to play it as it is and be a real challenger, play ugly, do all that type of stuff.
“Our target is to be a difficult opponent.
“It is too strong to say anything after two match days. You can discuss whatever you want - just do it without us."
