U.K. film magazine Empire will at its annual
Empire Awards on Sunday honor
Steven Spielberg with the "
Legend of Our Lifetime Award," organizers said Thursday.
They said that "today’s most iconic film director" would be presented the honor by Rakuten TV, which is also a title sponsor of the awards event.
The star-studded event will take place at Camden’s Roundhouse in London, 10 days ahead of the release of the filmmaker’s action adventure Ready Player One. Spielberg will attend the film's European premiere in London on Monday.
The Empire Awards celebrate the best in film and TV, voted for by fans.
"With a career that spans over five decades and includes countless awards, including three Academy Awards for best picture (Schindler’s List) and best director (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan), Spielberg is known across the globe as one of the greatest visual storytellers of all time," organizers said.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the biggest title last year in British cinemas, leads the Empire Awards pack with nine nominations, including for best film, best sci-fi fantasy, best actress, best actor and best director. Baby Driver and Get Out both have five nominations, while U.K. indie success God's Own Country is up for three honors.
The best British film category — sponsored by THR — includes God's Own Country, Darkest Hour, The Death of Stalin, Dunkirk and Paddington 2.
