ONE PERSON has died at
Heathrow Airport after a "serious" collision on the tarmac this morning.
Police have confirmed a man has died after two airport vehicles collided at around 6am this morning.
Another man was injured in the crash and sustained a broken shoulder.
At least one flight was evacuated following the incident, thought to be a collision between two ground vehicles.
A still image taken from the airport's webcam shows a police vehicle alongside two yellow trucks - one of which appears to have a crumpled bonnet.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police are investigating following a fatal collision at Heathrow airport. Police were called at 06:06hrs on Wednesday, 14 February following a collision between two airport vehicles on the taxiway at Heathrow Airport.
"Officers attended with London Ambulance Service colleagues. One male is believed to have sustained a broken shoulder; his injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing.
"Another male, aged in his 40s, was taken to a west London hospital with serious injuries. He has since died. Officers have informed next of kin. We await formal identification.
"A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course. There have been no arrests. The Health and Safety executive has been informed. Officers from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating."
Heathrow Airport’s official twitter account said: “Following an incident on the airfield involving two members of staff, an investigation is underway and we are working with the Police.
“This incident didn't involve any passengers and is not expected to cause any impact on journeys today.”
However they later said a plane had to be evacuated and other passengers warned of delays to their journeys.
A spokeswoman said: “We are dealing with a serious accident involving two vehicles on the airfield.
"We are working closely with the emergency services and updates will follow.
"The airfield remains open and we will work to minimise disruption to our passengers’ journeys.”
One passenger was waiting to board a flight when the incident took place. He was later evacuated from his BA flight to Zurich.
He said: “I was boarding through B48 at around 6:40am there was a visible incident of some kind of a stand outside the window by the boarding gate.
"I spoke to the BA staff on the desk who were also curious but uninformed.
"We boarded, waited, and then the captain gave a series of apologies and further delay announcements. At around 8:55am we all deplaned and I’m now back in the terminal waiting to see what happens next."
Police have been called to the scene of the incident, which took place at around 6am this morning.
A spokesman said: “Police were called at 6.06am on Wednesday following a collision between two airport vehicles on the taxiway at Heathrow Airport.
“Officers attended with London Ambulance Service colleagues. One male was treated for non-life threatening or life-changing injuries.
“Another male, aged in his 40s, has been taken to a West London hospital. We await an update as to his condition. There have been no arrests.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed. Officers from the serious collision investigation unit have been informed and are in attendance.”
