Councils across the country are due to hold
elections on Thursday, May 2, when people will be asked to vote for who they want to represent them for the next four years. In Cambridgeshire two councils are due to hold elections, Cambridge City Council and Peterborough City Council . The city councils are responsible for providing a number of services including waste collection, running leisure facilities, providing council housing, and making planning decisions. In Peterborough , the city council is a unitary authority, which means it has additional responsibilities, including road maintenance. The election for the next Cambridgeshire
police and Crime Commissioner will also be taking place on May 2. People living in every ward in Cambridge will be asked to vote for a councillor to represent them this year, with 14 of the city council’s 42 seats up for election. Labour administration as the largest party at the city council with 25 councillors. The largest opposition group is the Liberal
Democrats with 11 councillors, followed by the Green Party with four councillors. There is also one Conservative councillor and one independent councillor at the authority.
