I pitted Estee Lauders £65 serum against £12 Revolution rival and could barely tell the difference
When Revolution launched their Pro Miracle Night Rescue Serum Advanced Complex earlier this year, skincare enthusiasts immediately started to compare it to the highly-coveted Advanced Night Repair Serum Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex from Estee Lauder. I mean, I couldn’t possibly imagine why. Aside from their lengthy names, the two hydrating serums share a similar amber bottle, texture and hero ingredient, with their biggest obvious difference being the price tag. Estee Lauder’s esteemed serum comes in at £65 for 30ml , while Revolution’s affordable alternative costs just £12 , which means, if it does happen to be just as good, shoppers could find themselves saving some £53 on the budget-friendly find. Both promise big things when it comes to transforming your skin overnight, with Revolution’s described as ‘ a midnight miracle in a bottle’ , delivering visibly healthier, younger-looking skin in as little as four weeks, while the high-end product works to ‘reveal firmer, plumped and glowing skin’. And despite both being named ‘night’ serums, they’re recommended to be used for day and night, before your moisturiser. Estee Lauder and Revolution's serums share similar packaging, texture and even a key ingredient Looking at the packaging of both products, it’s easy to see why so many beauty buffs have suggested they’re alike, with gorgeous glass bottles that look and feel luxurious, finished off with chic gold lettering. Both products are 30ml, but Estee Lauder’s appears larger inside due to thicker packaging, but this works in its favour when it comes to dispensing the product. Both serums have pipette dropper style applicators, with Estee Lauder’s featuring a squeezy tip, while Revolution’s has a push down button . And while Revolution’s looks really sleek, it’s actually a little tricky to use - especially if you’ve just finished rubbing in your skincare and have residue left on your hands. Moreover, the neck of Revolution’s bottle is much more narrow, meaning if you want to place the product back into the bottle, it’s not as seamless as Estee Lauder’s. Both have dropper style applicators but the Estee Lauder one is more user-friendly In terms of how the product looks and feels, both have a peachy tone to their serum, but Estee Lauder’s is much deeper and richer. Placing a small amount onto the skin, Revolution’s formula is slightly more watery, with the expensive skincare hero being a little more viscous. Applying one to the left side of my face, and the other to the right, and had I been blindfolded, I don’t think I could have told a difference. Neither have a particularly strong fragrance, and none of them are sticky or greasy in texture, either, absorbing beautifully into my dry skin to leave it with a luminous glow. Taking a look at the ingredients, both serums hail sodium hyaluronate - a derivative of the uber-hydrating hyaluronic acid - as one of their main hero products, alongside their own individual complex blends made up of peptides, probiotics, ceramides and all the ‘good stuff’ our skin needs. Revolution calls theirs the ‘Pro Renew & Repair Complex CLT & Repair Complex CLR’ designed to boost hydration, even skin tone and texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and achieve a radiant healthy glow. Revolution's (top) is slightly more watery in consistency to Estee Lauder's (bottom) Estee Lauder’s is Tripeptide-32 , an exclusive peptide that ‘supports skin's natural day/night rhythm of protection by day and renewal at night’. I’ve been using the Estee Lauder serum in my nightly skincare routine for months, and have grown really fond of it for helping me tackle my texture while hydrating my very dry skin. But would I ditch it in favour of a £12 alternative? Both definitely have their similarities, being lightweight, soothing on skin and leaving it feeling plumped, glowy and slightly tighter, too. I do love the indulgence of the Estee Lauder product, but at £65, I might be inclined to alternate between the high-end and high street products for the sake of my bank balance. However, some shoppers have had no issues ditching the luxury product in favour of its purse-friendly counterpart, with the Revolution product having racked up more than 100 five-star reviews in a matter of months. One said: “Goodbye Estee Lauder hello Revolution… This serum is fabulous, it is easy to apply & smells nice. I am 62 & usually buy Estee Lauder but won't be anymore this serum is just as good!” My skin after using the Revolution serum Another added: “Firstly it smells incredible, it's sinks into your skin like butter on hot toast and completely absorbs leaving your skin feeling like satin.... that's without cream on top! Definitely a keeper!” However, some have criticised the fragrance, adding: “Very nice texture and feels really nice the next morning. The only thing I would change is the scent.” Meanwhile, others remain loyal to the Estee Lauder product, with one having used it for 40 years, writing: “I started using this when it was first introduced in the 1980s. Have tried other serums, but always come back to Advanced Night Repair. Worth every penny.” Another said: “I just put on Advanced Night Repair and my skin feels so soft. I am 80 yrs young and people don't believe it. Thank you Estee Lauder. I would definitely recommend it.” My skin after using the Estee Lauder serum As is to be expected, several shoppers have been put off by the price, commenting: “This product works ok but I don't think it is worth it for what it costs. I have bought other products that work just as well for a fraction of the cost.” But others say it’s the reason they look a decade younger, writing: “I say "Friend for life" because that's what this product means to me.The benefit my skin gets with this fabulous "Estee Lauder Night Repair" is just through the ceiling. We became firm Friends straight away in 2009. Now at the age of 78 years old I have so much to thank Night Repair for. Looking a good 10 years younger than I really am.” In the end, the choice between Revolution Pro and Estee Lauder boils down to personal preference and budget. While Estee Lauder is undeniably more premium, Revolution Pro proves to be a worthy contender with its affordable price point and very similar results. Personally, I think I’ll switch between the two to make my money stretch further. You can pick up the Estee Lauder serum here , while the Revolution alternative is available for £12 here.
