Classic comedy cursed by misogyny with controversial A-list cast
Cast your minds back to 2010, when rape jokes were considered the height of risqué comedy and when Get Him to the Greek ’s biggest shining stars – Russell Brand , Sean ‘ Diddy ’ Combs, and Jonah Hill – were at the peak of their Hollywood fame. Directed by Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel, Brand starred in the Forgetting Sarah Marshall spin-off film in his reprised role of rockstar Aldus SNOW, with Combs posing as Sergio Roma, the chief of fictional record label Pinnacle Records. Enter Hill as budding executive Aaron Green, who alongside Combs tries to get the wayward rocker to the Greek Theatre in LA for his 10th anniversary show. Sounds like a perfectly innocent comedy… right? One clip from the film recently kicked up a storm on Social Media , after Diddy was accused of a crime which his character Sergio essentially acts out in a scene. While Diddy denies all accusations against him – which have come via five separate legal documents in recent months – fans of the film were quick to point out the eerie similarities. The clip resurfaced on X and sees Combs’ character Roma sexually traffic a woman called Destiny to Aaron. Diddy really just playin himself in this movie #diddy #gethimtothegreek #pimp #dlman #traffickingawarenes ‘Excuse me, come here for a second, what’s your name?’ Roma asks Destiny – played by Carla Gallo – in what fans called a ‘sick’ scene. ‘Destiny, pay attention,’ he continues. ‘You are going to go and have sex with Aaron right now.’ Aaron mutters, ‘Disrespectful,’ before the scene cuts. Later on in the film Aaron then accuses Destiny of raping him. Knowing the accusations posed against Combs now, this scene has new sinister undertones. In the most recent lawsuit brought against Combs, former producer and videographer for the Coming Home rapper, Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones alleges Combs forced him to have sex with prostitutes. This is the last of five sets of legal documents which lay out serious allegations, the first of which came late last year from Combs’ ex-girlfriend, Cassie, who accused him of rape and violent behaviour. The claims were settled the next day, and he denied any wrongdoing. Combs was then accused of having drugged and date-raped a college student, and later sharing a ‘revenge porn’ style video of the abuse. A third then came forward, claiming that the Rapper and singer-songwriter Aaron Hall took turns raping her and a friend, before ‘choking her in a violent rage’. In the fourth lawsuit another woman – known as Jane Doe – alleged that she was attacked by Combs when she was a teenager. Combs issued a blanket denial of all allegations against him in December, saying in a statement: ‘Enough is enough. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy.’ ‘Sickening allegations have been made against me,’ he continued. ‘Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.’ In September, comedian, Actor and now YouTube conspiracy theorist Brand was accused of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse by four Women in a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches – allegations he strenuously denied. Metro.co.uk did some digging into the behind-the-scenes of Get Him to the Greek, and found some further startling results. In a video posted by Combs and his ‘dear friend’ Brand around the time of filming, they can be seen flying off to Las Vegas in a private jet for a weekend away. The rapper introduces the comedian as a ‘dear friend’ as they talk about how they are going to ‘find some women to have sex with’. Diddy's son held at gunpoint and pinned to wall in dramatic house raid footage 'Sick and creepy' 2010 film clip resurfaces with Diddy and 'dear friend' Russell Brand Usher reveals the shocking things he saw living with Diddy at age 13 Troubling clips of Diddy with 15-year-old Justin Bieber and on kids' TV show resurface ‘You’ve provided the plane, the tickets, the hotel for the big fight, I’ve provided the tooth picks though,’ Brand tells the camera. ‘And the whores,’ Diddy adds. ‘Well okay, we’ve not discussed that, but alright I will try to… I’m not a misogynist, I’m against that kind of language. I like to think of them as damsels,’ replied Brand. ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ is also said throughout the clip. Another video from 12 years ago also came to light – this time of Hill backstage at Get Him to the Greek. The Superbad actor can be seen following a woman’s bum with a camera after spinning around in a dance scene. He then seemingly says: ‘Nick, I’m gonna pass out,’ while focused on a woman’s bum, leading to an eruption of laughter on set. Here, he could be referring to director Nicolas. The video, posted to YouTube, is titled Behind the Scenes – Get Him to The Greek and was posted by BTS Movies. This comes after Hill’s ex-girlfriend accused him of being a ‘misogynist’ and a ‘narcissist’ during their years together in a scathing social media post last year. The surf instructor – Sarah Brady – posted a string of text messages she claims were exchanged between the pair on Instagram, in which he appeared to lay out his vastly misjudged ‘boundaries’. In the messages, the actor asked Sarah to remove any surfing photos from her Instagram which showed her ‘a** in a thong’ and when she said she had deleted ‘all the posts’, Hill allegedly told her it was a ‘good start’ but she didn’t ‘seem to get’ his point. The second screenshot then appeared to show Hill warning her that if she surfed with men, had ‘inappropriate friendships with men’, models, posts pictures of herself in a ‘bathing suit’ or ‘sexual pictures’, and has friendships with ‘women in unstable places’, then he was not the right man for her. Alongside the social media allegations, Sarah added: ‘Someone being an emotionally abusive partner doesn’t mean they’re a terrible person (often stems from their own trauma). ‘At the same time, it doesn’t mean it’s OK.’ Days later former Zoey 101 Actress Alexa Nikolas, 31, suggested on Twitter that Hill ‘slammed’ her against a door and ‘shoved his tongue down my throat’ without her consent when she was 16 years old. Addressing the allegation, Hill’s attorney Marty Singer told Deadline that the alleged incident ‘never happened’. The former child star claimed in her social media thread that the alleged incident occurred when she and the 22 Jump Street star stepped outside to get a cigarette during a house party. ‘Jonah Hill came over at some point and we were all pretty wasted because of course the predators were feeding us minors a bunch of alcohol,’ she wrote. The Hollywood actress continued: ‘Jonah Hill didn’t hand me the cig which I thought was weird and then as we walked back to the door I asked him for it and he said nothing but slammed me to the door and shoved his tongue down my throat. ‘I was so appalled I pushed him off of me and ran inside.’ So this is not just an innocent comedy – but a film created in spite of, or in the image of – its misogynistic cast. Alongside Get Him to the Greek are a swathe of other Superbad-era films, which might have a less problematic cast, but all still exist in this same boys’ club we got so desensitised to, and are now looking back on with fresh, critical eyes. Get Them in the Bin is the comedy we’re all still waiting for 23 years on. Greta Gerwig, where are you? Got a story?
