Samsung is expected to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 Fan Edition this summer. How can the South Korean company reach an attractive price for consumers who want to buy their first foldable phone? The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 (Photo by JUNG YEON-JE/AFP via Getty Images) Discussions around a Fan Edition of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 increased earlier this year when various model numbers and certifications were discovered that pointed to a cheaper “FE” Fan edition model. By making smart choices around the peripherals and materials, Samsung could bring the foldable form factor down to an attractive price point. Dropping support for the S-Pen stylus, reducing the memory and storage available, and moving away from exotic materials such as titanium to cheaper alternatives could all help the bill of materials. The latest details around Samsung’s expansion of the Galaxy Z Fold pick out one area where Samsung could make a saving. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE is listed with an Exynos chipset, Samsung’s homegrown alternative to the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The Galaxy S24 family use a mix of Exynos and Snapdragon across the three key models, and the expectation of an Exynos chipset in a Fan Edition was recently reinforced with December’s Galaxy S23 FE. The post also notes a Fan Edition model of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which makes sense in terms of positioning but has not been discussed as much as a Fold FE in the Samsung community. Nevertheless, listing this with a Snapdragon 7 series chipset, one step down from the class-leading Snapdragon 8 series, highlights the same financial path: trim down the specs and the performance potential by offering an everyday chipset. Whichever FE model Samsung decides to release, expect the chipset to be a touch lower and slower than the standard model.
