Explore Malta's capital, Valletta (Image: Getty Images) It may be small but Malta is a destination that packs a punch. Conde Nast Traveller even named it among the best holiday destinations to visit in May , praising its ‘delicious mix of European and African culture’. The island’s capital city, Valletta, boasts the title of being Europe’s smallest, yet it doesn’t skimp on beautiful architecture, gorgeous views and bustling bars and restaurants. Whilst in the city a visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral is a must. The magnificent building, built between 1573 and 1577, contains two Caravaggio paintings. Also among Valletta's gems are the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens in the southeastern part of the city. The upper gardens are perched overlooking the Grand Harbour, and feature gorgeous views and stunning terraces, while the lower gardens are found on top of the Valletta bastions. The Blue Lagoon at Comino Island near Malta (Image: Getty Images) Conde Nast Traveller recommends Valetta for a long weekend, but if you have more time at your disposal it suggests heading to nearby Gozo which is easily reached by a ferry. Here you can explore ‘sandy beaches in hidden coves’ and ‘swim in turquoise lagoons’, as well as its historic ruins and beautiful hiking paths. One of Malta’s most famous spots is the Blue Lagoon, located on the island of Comino which is nestled between Malta and Gozo. It has crystal clear waters and stunning jagged cliffs. It can be busy during the peak summer season so spring is one of the best times to go. For more of the latest What's On news, click here.
