The Sportsman, in Elm near Wisbech, put forward the plans at the end of last year. The car park will be built on land at the back of the venue with new lighting and an acoustic fence that would tie in with the pub and existing beer garden. A previous application was approved in 2021, but the permission had since elapsed. The pub said that the new facility would ease the pressure on parking on busier days by taking parked cars off the side of the road. They also hope to hold community events on the land, including a village fair, a car boot sale and a car meet among other things. One person said: "Lowering fence height will reduce privacy from this car park to private gardens rear of properties surrounding this proposed car park." Another added: "They are licensed for
music until midnight but do not have to close until 1am. We are going to hear people leaving the pub after a good night out at the pub after a few drinks. My grandchildren stay here regularly and I need them to be protected late at night from antisocial behaviour as much as possible." A design and access statement from applicants Elmsport Ltd said: "Parking at the pub is generally adequate, but becomes overwhelmed when there are music events, particularly busy weekend evenings, or when there are church weddings or funerals. The pub’s staff are regularly asked by locals/customers whether the land to the rear of the pub could be used to relieve parking pressures during these times. "The land in question has historically been used in connection with the pub. There is a photo hanging in the pub taken in 1980 which clearly shows it being used as amenity land. "The land would be used for controlled staff and customer parking during these times. The applicants do not want a permanent car park or a permanent beer garden on this land, simply a controlled amenity space to use in connection with the pub for overflow parking and occasional events throughout the year."
