Drivers are being warned that a simple 20p car check could save them from a hefty £10,000 fine. With the RAC predicting over 14 million journeys by car across the Easter bank holiday weekend, tyre experts are urging drivers to make this quick 20p tyre pressure check before setting off. Ignoring this 20p tyre pressure check will only save drivers a few minutes, but it could cost them up to £10,000 in fines. Each illegal tyre can result in a £2,500 fine and three penalty points. Tyre expert Richard Croft, operations director at etyres, said: "Neglecting to check your tyre pressure before going on a road trip is like leaving home without a map: you're setting yourself up for a journey filled with unnecessary risks and potential hazards." He warns that while many Brits rely on tyre pressure sensors, these typically only highlight a loss of 25% in tyre pressure. By the time these sensors flash, your tyre is severely under-inflated, so tyres should still be regularly checked before road trips. You can check if your car needs its tyres topped up with air by placing a 20p coin in the grooves of the tyre. Unscrew the valve cap from the tyre’s valve stem. Attach the pressure gauge by pressing it firmly into the valve stem - you will hear a hissing sound as the air gets released. A digital gauge will display the reading on the screen. If you’re using a manual gauge, wait until the dial stabilises before you take your reading. Check your vehicle’s recommended pressure - this can be found in your owner’s manual or on your driver’s side door. Compare the reading on your pressure gauge to your vehicle’s recommended pressure.
