Bill Belichicks son Steve mocks NFL legend for not having a job after Patriots exit
Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, has been teased by his son Steve for being jobless ahead of the 2024 NFL season. After a successful 24-year stint with the Patriots , where he became the most victorious coach in NFL history, Belichick and the organisation decided it was time to part ways. During his time as head coach, Belichick won an impressive six Super Bowls between 1999 and 2023, more than any other coach in history. Of course, having legendary quarterback Tom Brady on his team played a significant role in this success. However, Bill wasn't the only Belichick to leave the Patriots. His son Steve also stepped down from his position as assistant coach. Steve joined the Patriots in 2012 and was primarily involved in defensive coaching. Unlike his father, Steve has already secured a new role after being hired as the new defensive coordinator for Washington's college Football team. Reporters are still keen to draw comparisons between him and his father, something Steve is trying to shake off. When asked about their similarities by the media in Washington, Steve humorously pointed out one key difference: "We definitely have similarities, but I got a Job and he doesn't. He knows that." Despite the playful jab, it's clear that Steve holds a great deal of respect for his father. However, he is determined to make his own mark in coaching, rather than simply being known as 'Bill Belichick's son'. Steve opened up about his career and family, saying: "I look up to my dad, he's a mentor to me but I'm myself. I'm excited to get out on the field and work with these guys... just going to be myself, not gonna try to be him." But he chose to leave, wanting to make a name for himself. "There was a couple things going on, whether it was stay in New England or bounce around a little bit," Steve said on the ' Green Light ' podcast. "I worked with Jedd Fisch, the head coach here (Washington), he was (with the Patriots) in 2020, coaching the quarterbacks. "We got to know each other, and then he left and went to Arizona. We kept in touch, he gave me this opportunity and I’m just running with it. I grew up with my dad. Being a son, you’re always kind of in the shadow. When he left Cleveland, I was eight, but ever since then, I tried to not be him. "I want to be Steve. I don’t want to be Bill. People say we sound the same, so that’s one thing I can’t really change, but other than that, I’ll take a couple of things. But I want to be myself." The Patriots will still have a Belichick on their team, as Brian, Steve's younger brother, is staying on as a safeties coach. This means that the Patriots still haven't started an NFL season in the 21st century without a Belichick on their staff. Sign up to our NFL newsletter!
