Kate shared in a recent ITV documentary that Derek's continuous treatment amounted to £16,000 per month leading to significant debts for her. These medical costs alone exceeded her monthly income from ITV , not to mention her regular payments for the mortgage and bills. Kate sadly announced the passing of her husband, 56, in January after a prolonged battle with long Covid . In December, he suffered a heart attack from which he never recovered. The life of the former

Another instance illustrates a mobility coach striving to get Derek back on his feet. However, the cost of these therapies was not light and resulted in an £800,000 debt for Kate. Kate explained that her husband didn't qualify for funded care ( Image: ITV) (Image: ITV) In the documentary, Kate reveals that she's struggling financially: "Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point. I am in debt. I can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek's care and I can't even use the money I do have to support Derek's recovery because it's going on the basics all the time." Documentary director Lucy Wilcox then chimes in, admitting viewers might be 'surprised' to hear Kate discuss financial problems. She assumes people think Kate is "loaded" on account of her TV work. To which Kate responds: "Listen, I'm not going to pretend that I am poorly paid, I have an incredible
Job that I love, which is well-paid, but it's not enough." The morning TV presenter estimates her debts range from £500,000-£800,000. Time and time again the system tells us that Derek isn't sick enough, doesn't have enough of a health need to qualify for funded care," she says, framing her struggle as a universal one. She continues, "I've appealed but that still hasn't been processed two-and-a-half, three years later. If this is what it's like for me, what on Earth is it like for everybody else? Something has to be done, or the entire service, the people working in it, everything is going to break." "Derek's care, the basic needs, not including any therapy, which I am happy to pay on top, is nearly £4,000 a week. How can I afford that? How can anybody afford £16,000 a month? Please, God, there could be another 40 years of this." She added: "We are entirely reliant on extraordinary carers but the system in which they work is unbelievably complicated and underfunded, and trying to meet an impossible need. "Why is it that people who get sick and it's no longer considered the right thing for them to be in hospital... why does coming home feel like falling off a cliff?" It's thought she makes £544,000 a year, with most of that money coming from the TV station. But that's not the only way she gets money. She also has her own programme on Smooth Radio. Because of this, at one time, Kate was thought to have a net worth of about £1.5 million, as some websites say. However, we don't know how much of her savings she's had to use while she took time off to look after her husband and kids, or how much she's spent on care.
